The Leader of Bakassi Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River, Mr Etim Ene, has appealed to Politicians and NGOs to fulfill their pledges to the camp.
Ene made the appeal on Monday in an interview at Akpabuyo.
“On several occasions, many NGOs have visited this camp to do a need assessment after which they tell us that they are coming back to do something for us and after that we will not see them again.
“The same thing with politicians, some of them came here to promise us this and that and after that you will not see them again.
“We appeal to them to assist us, especially in the area of means of livelihood. We need shelter; we need clothing; we need food; education for our children and so on.
“Cameroun have taken everything from us including our farmland; our homes; our fishing materials and we returned to Nigeria with virtually nothing,’’ he said.
He commended the National Commission for Refugees for training 60 of their youths on skills acquisition free of charge, saying that such gesture would go a long way in empowering them.
“That is the kind of thing we are praying for. We are not saying give us fish, but teach us how to fish. We also appreciate the Nigerian Ports Authority; they have been very supportive since 2018.
“They have assisted us with many items including food, medications and even clothing.
“In the area of medications, many organisations have done well and we appreciate them, but like Oliver Twist, we are still asking for more,’’ he said.
