Repositioning Of Insurance Sector Takes Centre Stage At The 3rd Annual Confab Of Legal Committee Of NIA

BY NKECHI NAECHE-ESEZOBOR––The Legal Committee of the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) on Monday held its 3rd annual conference.


The conference which took place in Lagos featured CEOs and stakeholders in the insurance industry.


Speaking at the conference Chairperson of the committee, Onosen Divine Alegbe said the committee through its conference hopes to change the perception of the public against the industry. 
According to her they hope through the conference to reach out to policy makers and led their voice to issues that affect the industry. 

Speaking on the theme of the conference “Uplifting the Insurance Sector: Eliminating the age-old Misconceptions”, she said the theme is its quest to ensure that the Insurance industry  is given its deserving place of pride in society, while also enlightening the public on the true essence of insurance. 


She said the committee contributions have always been aimed at ensuring an effective collaboration between, operators and the regulators to ensure effective service delivery to members of the public. 


She explained that the conference will always serve as a medium to equip members of the committee with the much needed tools to achieve the set aims and objectives of the Committee.


Michael Ango of Anderson Tax LP while presenting his paper on “The Nigeria data protection regulation: Compliance option for insurance Industry” urged the participants to ensure that they get the consent of policy holders before using their data.


According to him when such consent is not granted it can  lead to an expensive legal battle.


He noted that sensitivity documents such as medical report; next of kin of a customers must be protected. 


Speaking further Barr Afolabi Elebiju, Principal (Lelaw Advocate & Solicitor) who is the conference chairman urge the legal committee to do all in its power to take its seat at table in ensuring economic development so as to boost the confidence of investors on the sector.

He appreciated the committee for lending a voice to contribute to policy making and laws that relates to insurance.
