The Federal Government has said Nigerians who do not pay tax are not eligible to apply for the 5,000 housing units built by the Ministry of Works and Housing under the National Housing Programme.

The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, had announced last week that Nigerians could apply for the housing units on a portal launched in Abuja.

Fashola noted that access to affordable houses had remained a challenge for the average Nigerian.

The Federal Government said on the portal that the off-takers must provide “current tax certificate/pay slip”.

It added that the document must be “the most recent copy of your tax clearance/ pay slip certificate”.

Another requirement is a digital copy of valid means of identification, including National I.D., drivers licence and passport.

The government said mortgage subscribers would make available letters of recommendation from any primary mortgage bank.

Fashola had said, “We currently have over 5,000 units at different stages of completion. The houses range from one, two and three semi-detached bungalows and one to three bedroom flats.

“The least selling price for each of these houses will be N7.2m, and the highest will be N16.19m. The highest is a three-bedroom bungalow; it is not just the house but it also has land along with it. The bungalows are a little more expensive than the blocks of flats which do not have additional land.”
