The Central Bank of Nigeria, ( CBN), in partnership with NIBSS, has launched the Non-Resident Bank Verification Number platform in Abuja. I
The new platform will help Nigerians abroad to get a BVN remotely, ending the need for physical presence in Nigeria.
Speaking at the event held in Abuja on the CBN Govenor, Olayemi Cardoso, said that the platform is a great development in Nigeria’s financial inclusion and a critical bridge connecting the country to its global citizens.
“For too long, many Nigerians abroad have faced difficulties accessing financial services at home due to physical verification requirements,” said the Governor.
”The NRBVN changes that through secure digital verification and robust Know Your Customer (KYC) processes, Nigerians worldwide should now be able to access financial services more easily and affordably.”
“We are building a secure, efficient, and inclusive financial ecosystem for Nigerians globally,” he said.
“This platform is not just about financial access—it’s about national inclusion, innovation, and shared prosperity.”
On disaopra remittance, he said the inflows rose to $4.73 billion in 2024 from $3.3 billion in 2023.
He assured that the NRBVN, with complementary policy measures, could help Nigeria reach its target of $1 billion in monthly remittances.
“With the introduction of NRBVN and complementary policy measures, we are optimistic about achieving our ambitious target of \$1bn in monthly remittance flows.”
The Deputy Governor, Economic Policy, CBN, Mr Muhammad Abdullahi, also described the NRBVN initiative as a transformative tool for enhancing the banking experience for Nigeria’s diaspora.
He called on stakeholders to collaborate in refining the platform to meet the evolving needs of the diaspora community.
