US Mission Pays Tribute to Late Imam Abdullahi Abubakar

BY JWEL OBIANO—The United States Mission in Nigeria has expressed deep condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of Imam Abdullahi Abubakar, the revered Chief Imam of Nghar village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, who died on January 15, 2026, at the age of 90.

In a statement, the U.S. Mission described the late Imam as a courageous advocate of religious tolerance and interfaith dialogue, noting his lifelong commitment to fostering peace and building bridges among diverse religious communities.

It recalled that in recognition of his exceptional bravery and unwavering dedication to religious freedom, the United States Department of State honoured Imam Abubakar with the International Religious Freedom Award in 2019.

According to the Mission, Imam Abubakar’s selfless actions embodied humanity, interfaith harmony and peaceful coexistence, adding that his enduring legacy of compassion, acceptance and unity will continue to inspire people in Nigeria, the United States and beyond.
