BY MICHEAL CHIEJINA—The National Forum of Former Legislators has thrown its weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid for a second term, naming him its preferred presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
The endorsement was announced in a communiqué issued at the Forum’s National Summit held in Abuja. At the meeting, members also urged the National Assembly to amend the 1999 Constitution to formally adopt the principle of rotational presidency.
As reported by National Assembly Correspondent Mitaire Ikpen, the Forum is made up of past federal and state lawmakers, including former presiding officers, who are united by a shared commitment to contribute their legislative experience to national development.
With the summit themed “National Unity and Nation Building: Beyond 2031,” participants emphasized the importance of collective action and inclusive governance as critical tools for achieving long-term reforms and sustainable growth, regardless of political differences. Speakers at the event stressed that Nigeria’s continued stability depends on justice, fairness, and an equitable sharing of political power through rotation.
The Forum explained that its endorsement of President Tinubu was driven by what it described as far-reaching socio-economic reforms under his administration, which it said have enhanced security, strengthened democratic institutions, and improved economic stability.
In addition, the former legislators called for greater involvement of their members in the ongoing constitutional review process, noting that their experience would be valuable in shaping reforms that reflect national interests.
