Traffic congestion has worsened along the Gwagwalada section of the Abuja–Lokoja highway following the closure of one lane on the bridge, leaving many commuters stranded for hours.
The situation has significantly slowed movement for motorists travelling out of the Federal Capital Territory and those entering Abuja from Lokoja, resulting in long queues of vehicles on both sides of the road.
By Monday morning, several civil servants and schoolchildren were seen walking considerable distances to their offices and schools as traffic remained at a standstill.
While authorities are yet to explain the reason for the partial closure, large metal structures were sighted on the affected part of the bridge and had not been cleared as of the time of filing this report.
The gridlock has also led to minor accidents, with some commuters, including workers and students, abandoning their journeys midway due to the prolonged delay.
