BY NKECHI NAECHE-ESEZOBOR—The Enugu State Government has announced the commencement of a statewide verification exercise targeting newly employed civil servants, pensioners, retirees, and next-of-kin who were unable to participate in previous documentation processes.
In a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, the government said the exercise is designed to strengthen transparency, improve record accuracy, and ensure the prompt and orderly payment of legitimate entitlements.
According to the statement, the verification will cover four key categories: new employee verification, pension verification, gratuity verification, and verification of next-of-kin of deceased retirees eligible for benefits.
The exercise is scheduled to begin on Monday, May 18, 2026, at the Local Government Staff Pension Board in Enugu, with daily activities expected to commence at 8:00 a.m.
Pensioners and retirees undergoing gratuity verification will be attended to between May 18 and May 22, while newly employed civil servants will undergo verification from May 25 to May 29.
The government stated that eligible participants include newly recruited civil servants, pensioners who missed earlier exercises, retirees awaiting gratuity payments, and next-of-kin of deceased retirees entitled to benefits.
Participants are required to present relevant documentation, including retirement notices, pension identification, BVN, NIN, bank statements, and, where applicable, death certificates and letters of administration. Newly employed staff must also present appointment letters, academic qualifications, BVN, NIN, and other supporting credentials.
The government emphasized that all participants must appear in person, warning that double registration or attempts at multiple verification would be treated as fraud and may lead to sanctions, including forfeiture of entitlements.
It further clarified that only individuals who missed previous verification exercises are expected to attend, noting that those who have already completed verification and received full payments are exempt.
Beneficiaries who have received partial payments were directed to declare all prior transactions and provide evidence during the exercise, while all participants were urged to ensure their bank details are correct and active.
For enquiries, the state government provided a helpline (0916-810-1470) and email contact (enuguverify@gmail.com) for support and clarification.
Reaffirming its commitment to accountability and efficiency, the Enugu State Government said the exercise is part of ongoing efforts to ensure that all genuine beneficiaries receive their entitlements in a transparent and timely manner.
