In what been described bringing an end to months of speculation about the party’s leadership structure, a faction of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday officially confirmed Ambassador Umar Damagum as its substantive National Chairman
His ratification took place on Saturday at the 2025 Elective National Convention held inside the main bowl of the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan.
Thousands of party delegates, leaders, and supporters filled the venue for what many described as a decisive moment for the PDP.
Hon. Tony Abineri, the Chairman of the Edo State chapter of the PDP and leader of the Forum of State Chairmen, moved the motion on behalf of more than 3,000 accredited delegates.
Abineri’s motion was immediately supported by another party chieftain, Edward Marshal.
According to Abineri, the decision was in line with Section 32 of the PDP Constitution (as amended), which empowers the convention to confirm the party’s national leadership.
While presenting the motion, he stated:
“I hereby move the motion for the ratification of Ambassador Umaru Damagum as the substantive National Chairman of our great party.
This action is in accordance with Section 32 of the PDP Constitution as amended.”
The announcement drew applause across the stadium as delegates welcomed the decision, which many believe will help stabilise the party as it prepares for future elections.
The convention continues with other key decisions, including votes on strategic leadership positions and policy directions for the party.
