The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has vowed not to yield to any form of pressure or interference regarding its forthcoming convention for confirming its presidential flagbearer, following a disagreement linked to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

In a statement released on Friday, the opposition party claimed that officials of the A Class Event Centre located in Wuse 2, Abuja, disclosed that Wike had allegedly threatened to seal off the venue should it allow the PDP gathering to take place there.

According to the party, every requirement tied to securing the facility had already been met, including complete payment and other logistical preparations.

The PDP further stated that security authorities had already been informed ahead of the planned meeting.

The party explained that its lawyers had been instructed to send a formal notice to the management of the event centre, emphasizing the validity of the agreement between both parties.

Regardless of the alleged intimidation, the PDP affirmed that the special convention aimed at endorsing former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate would still hold on Saturday, May 30, 2026, by 10 a.m. at the Abuja location.

The party also reiterated that Nigeria is governed by constitutional law and cautioned against using threats or coercion to silence opposition voices.

“It is not within the powers of the FCT Minister to decide which programmes can take place or the locations where they should occur,” the statement noted, adding that such actions contradict democratic values.

The PDP also urged party executives, members of the National Executive Committee, and supporters nationwide to participate in the convention as earlier scheduled.

The statement was endorsed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong.

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), at its 188th Meeting, held today resolved to waive, and has waived, screening requirements for His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and deemed him as duly screened in accordance with the Constitution of the Party for the purpose of participation in the upcoming primary elections.

According to statement posted via its official X account by Felix Morka, the Party’s National Publicity Secretary, that this  decision was made pursuant to the powers conferred on the NWC under Article 13.4 (xiii) and (xiv) of the Constitution of APC to organise and supervise the Party’s primaries and, in special circumstances, grant waivers, in the best interest of the Party.

The NWC noted that the President @officialABAT has received overwhelming endorsement and vote of confidence from critical stakeholders of the Party, including the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), the leadership and members of the National Assembly, and other organs of the Party at the APC National Summit of May 22, 2025, and other major statutory events of the Party.

It noted further that, as the incumbent President, and leader of our great Party, having been duly screened and cleared ahead of the 2022 presidential primaries, requiring his physical appearance before a screening committee, at this time, would be redundant and unnecessary.

BY NKECHI NAECHE-ESEZOBOR —The Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC), has announced the resumption of the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, with the third and final phase scheduled to commence on Monday, 11 May 2026.

The Commission recalled that the second phase of the exercise was suspended on 17 April 2026 to enable a comprehensive clean-up of the voters’ register following its display for claims and objections by registrants.

According to INEC, the third phase of the CVR will run from 11 May to 10 July 2026. During this period, eligible Nigerians who have attained the age of 18, as well as those unable to register in previous phases, are encouraged to take advantage of the exercise.

The Commission also urged registered voters seeking to transfer their registration, replace lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), or correct their personal details to access its online portal at cvr.inecnigeria.org or visit INEC offices at state and local government levels nationwide.

Following the registration period, INEC said the Register of Voters will be displayed for claims and objections from 23 July to 29 July 2026, allowing citizens to verify and challenge entries to ensure accuracy and credibility.

The Commission assured the public that all necessary arrangements have been concluded for the smooth conduct of the exercise and called on eligible Nigerians to participate actively in strengthening the electoral process.

The statement was signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, dated 5 May 2026.

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have announced an indefinite industrial action effective May 1, following a breakdown in talks with the Federal Government.

In a letter dated April 30 and jointly signed by NASU General Secretary and SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, the unions stated that the strike would begin at midnight.

They explained that discussions with the government failed to yield a final agreement or any revised proposal on outstanding allowances before the deadline.

The unions noted that although the government withdrew its earlier circular proposing a 30 per cent increase in the consolidated non-teaching tools allowance, no alternative offer was presented to replace it.

According to the Joint Action Committee (JAC), the pace of engagement fell short of expectations, leaving key issues unresolved.

They further disclosed that members had earlier mandated their leadership to take decisive steps if negotiations were not concluded by April 30.

The unions therefore accused the Federal Government of failing to resolve the dispute through constructive dialogue, prompting the decision to embark on a total and indefinite strike.

“As negotiations remained inconclusive and no new proposal was made, all members are hereby directed to commence a full-scale industrial action from 12:00 a.m. on Friday, May 1, 2026,” the statement indicated.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has stopped the Independent National Electoral Commission from recognising or participating in any state congresses conducted by a disputed interim leadership of the African Democratic Congress.

The court also restrained former Senate President David Mark and other party leaders from interfering with the roles and tenure of elected state executives, stating that such powers rest with existing state executive committees.

The decision followed a suit filed by Norman Obinna and others representing ADC state chairmen and executive committees across the country.

The plaintiffs challenged the legality of a caretaker national leadership, arguing that it had no constitutional authority to organise state congresses or create committees for that purpose.

They asked the court to affirm the legitimacy of the current state executives and stop any parallel arrangements being carried out by the disputed leadership.

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik held that the claims had merit and focused on whether the defendants had lawful authority to take over the functions of elected state party structures.

The court referred to constitutional provisions requiring political parties to operate democratically and noted that party officials are bound by fixed tenure limits under the ADC constitution.

The judge also examined the creation of a “congress committee” by the defendants and found that such a structure was not recognised by the party’s constitution.

While acknowledging that courts generally avoid interfering in internal party affairs, the judge stressed that intervention is necessary where there is an alleged breach of constitutional or legal provisions.

She ruled that the tenure of elected state executive committees remains valid and must be respected until properly concluded under the party’s rules.

The court therefore set aside the actions of the caretaker leadership and barred INEC from recognising any congresses organised under that arrangement.

It further restrained David Mark and others from organising or supervising congresses or conventions outside the framework of the party’s constitution.

The judge dismissed preliminary objections from the defendants, holding that the matter falls within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court due to its connection with electoral and regulatory issues involving INEC.

She also held that the plaintiffs had the legal standing to bring the case, as they were directly affected by the alleged actions of the defendants.

The court concluded by resolving all issues in favour of the plaintiffs, affirming the authority of elected state executives and rejecting the validity of the disputed caretaker arrangements.
