Norwegian Prime Minister, Jonas Store on Monday confirmed that he received a letter from the United State President, Donald Trump, dismissing any obligation to think purely of peace.

Store said that Trump also reaffirmed his desire to control Greenland.

He said that the letter had come in response to a short message to President Trump from him earlier in the day.

Trump, in the letter said he spoke on behalf Finnish President, Alexander Stubb and himself.

Trump, also in the letter, referred to Norway’s decision not to award him the Nobel Peace Prize on what he described as “stopping eight wars.”

“I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of peace.

“I can now think about what is good and proper for the United States,” Trump added.

He further claimed that since NATO’s inception, the U.S. has contributed more to NATO than any other country, and now it is NATO’s time do something for the U.S.

“The complete and total control of Greenland by the United States is the only way to ensure global security,” Trump said.

European Commission spokesperson Olof Gill on Monday said Leaders of EU countries will hold an emergency summit on Thursday to discuss U.S. threats related to Greenland.

The summit will assess possible retaliatory measures in response to threatened tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on countries that oppose his plan to “acquire” Greenland.

Gill said the EU continues to engage “at all levels” with Washington over its new tariff threats and is taking “every possible step” to protect the bloc’s economic interests.

He added that the use of the anti-coercion instrument is not ruled out.

He stressed that the priority is engagement rather than escalation with the United States. However, “should the threatened tariffs be imposed, the European Union has tools at its disposal and is prepared to respond,’’ he added.

Global value chains have entered an era of structural volatility, according to a World Economic Forum report released today, forcing companies and governments to reevaluate how and where they invest and produce. The report finds that nearly three in four business leaders now prioritize resilience investments, with 74% viewing resilience as a driver of growth.

Set against a backdrop of geopolitical fragmentation, accelerating technological change and mounting resource constraints, the new report – Global Value Chains Outlook 2026: Orchestrating Corporate and National Agility – developed in collaboration with Kearney, examines how companies and governments can remain competitive as disruption becomes a permanent feature rather than a cyclical shock.

“Volatility is no longer a temporary disruption; it is a structural condition leaders must plan for,” said Kiva Allgood, Managing Director, World Economic Forum. “Competitive advantage now comes from foresight, optionality and ecosystem coordination. Companies and countries that build these capabilities together will be best positioned to attract investment, secure supply and sustain growth in an increasingly fragmented global economy.”

The scale of the shift is already evident. In 2025 alone, tariff escalations between major economies reshuffled more than $400 billion in global trade flows, while disruptions across major shipping routes pushed container shipping costs up 40% year on year, signalling a decisive move away from short-term shocks towards enduring uncertainty. At the same time, manufacturing output across advanced economies is growing at its weakest pace since 2009, while more than 3,000 new trade and industrial policy measures were introduced globally in 2025 alone – more than three times the annual level recorded a decade ago. Together, these forces underscore why supply chain resilience has become a central determinant of national competitiveness and corporate strategy.

A central feature of the report is the launch of the Manufacturing and Supply Chain Readiness Navigator, a new digital tool that translates these insights into actionable intelligence. Drawing on leading global indices, the Navigator supports strategic decision-making on industrial policy and manufacturing footprint design. Governments can use it to diagnose competitiveness gaps and prioritize reforms, while companies can assess infrastructure readiness and ecosystem maturity when making location and investment decisions.

The report also highlights how targeted national approaches are already shaping manufacturing competitiveness. In Ireland, enterprise-led upskilling through Skillnet Ireland links government, business and educators to deliver subsidized training aligned with industry needs. In China, large-scale investment in digital infrastructure under the New Infrastructure initiative has enabled real-time industrial connectivity through widespread 5G deployment. In Qatar, a national dashboard tracking essential food items in real time strengthens supply security by enabling early intervention, buffer stocks and rapid, data-driven responses to disruption.

“Supply chain disruption in 2026 will be constant and structural. Geopolitical fragmentation, shifting trade rules and labour shortages are all redefining how value is created and moved,” said Per Kristian Hong, Partner, Kearney. “For supply leaders, the priority is no longer forecasting disruption, but redesigning operating models to function under permanent uncertainty. That means moving away from efficiency-driven supply chains and towards adaptive networks that can be reconfigured with optionality as conditions change.”

Following President Donald Trump’s recent redesignation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC), a classification that places the West African nation under heightened scrutiny for alleged violations of religious freedom, United States House Subcommittee on Africa on Thursday commenced a public hearing to review it.

It was gathered that lawmakers convened at 5 pm to examine the implications of the designation, which, if upheld by the Senate, could pave the way for sanctions against Nigerian officials found to be involved in acts of religious persecution.

The CPC status may also restrict certain forms of US bilateral assistance to Nigeria.

A government official in Taiwan on Wednesday confirmed that no fewer 14 people lost their lives when a decades-old lake barrier burst in Taiwan, after Super Typhoon Ragasa pounded the island with torrential rain.

The lake in eastern Hualien county — formed by a series of landslides that created a natural dam wall — burst Tuesday, washing away a bridge and sweeping into a town with a trail of thick sludge and mud.
Hsu Cheng-hsiung, 55, a neighbourhood leader of Kuang Fu township, who confirmed the sad development to AFP, said, “It was like a volcano erupting…. the muddy floodwaters came roaring straight into the first floor of my house,”, told AFP.
A Hualien County Government press official, Lee Kuan-ting, also disclosed that at least14 people were killed and 18 were injured
Premier Cho Jung-tai , who visited the area on Wednesday, pledging to assist those affected, said, “As for the 14 people who lost their lives, we must find out why evacuation orders were not carried out in the affected area, leading to such a tragedy. We still have more than a hundred people missing, and this is our greatest concern right now.”
According to the National Fire Agency, at least 152 people are missing in Hualien and elsewhere in Taiwan.
A resident, Yen Shau, 31, told AFP that, “It was a disaster movie,” adding that an hour before the lake burst, many people were still at the local supermarket and grocery store.
“Within minutes, the water had risen to halfway up the first floor,” he said, just as he added that he couldn’t sleep Tuesday night for fear of another deluge from the lake, and on Wednesday, he was shovelling mud from his home.
“The mud was just too deep, too deep to dig out,” he added.
Footage released by the fire agency showed flooded streets, half-submerged cars and uprooted trees.

Following  an earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan, killing more than 800 people, authorities have commenced massive rescue efforts on Tueaday for survivors in the rubble of homes destroyed by the quake.

The 6.0-magnitude earthquake, followed by at least five aftershocks, hit remote areas in mountainous provinces near the border with Pakistan around midnight Sunday.

The Head of the Kunar Provincial Disaster Management Authority, Ehsanullah Ehsan, who  said  “operations continued throughout the night, ”added that there were “still injured people left in the distant villages” in need of evacuation to hospitals.

Villagers joined the rescue efforts, using their bare hands to clear debris of simple mud and stone homes built into steep valleys.

The dead, some of them children, were wrapped in white shrouds by villagers who prayed over their bodies before burying them.

According to the USGS, the earthquake epicentre was about 27 kilometres (17 miles) from Jalalabad, which said it struck a shallow eight kilometres below the Earth’s surface.

After decades of conflict, Afghanistan is one of the poorest countries in the world, facing a protracted humanitarian crisis and the influx of millions of Afghans forced back to the country by neighbours Pakistan and Iran in recent years.

Since the Taliban seized power in 2021, foreign aid to the country has been slashed, undermining the impoverished nation’s already hamstrung ability to respond to disasters.

Indian authorities have disclosed that flooding in Punjab have killed no fewer than 29 people and affected over 250, 000 last month.

They added that a thousand villages in India’s Punjab state are marooned by deadly floods, with thousands forced to seek shelter in relief camps

Authorities have said they fear a “huge loss of livestock,” the full extent of which will only be clear when the waters recede, according to a bulletin issued by the state authorities late Monday.

India’s army and disaster teams have carried out vast rescue operations, deploying more than 1,000 boats and 30 helicopters to rescue the stranded or supply food.

The State’s Chief Minister, Bhagwant Mann calling it “one of the worst flood disasters in decades.”

The region is often dubbed India’s breadbasket, but more than 940 square kilometres (360 square miles) of farmland are flooded, leading to “devastating crop losses”,  Mann wrote in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Modi on Monday, assured him of the federal government’s “full support.”

“The most important thing is to save the lives of people and helpless animals trapped in the water,” Mann said in a statement.

Rivers in the region cross into Pakistan, where floodwater has also engulfed swathes of land.

Floods and landslides are common development during the June-September monsoon season in the subcontinent, but experts say climate change, coupled with poorly planned development, is increasing their frequency, severity and impact.

According to the national weather department, Northwest India has seen rainfall surge by more than a third on average from June to September,

In the capital Delhi, relentless rains have swollen the Yamuna river — which breached its danger mark on Tuesday, inundating several areas and creating traffic snarl-ups lasting for hours.

Deadly floods triggered by record-breaking rain also killed dozens in India’s Jammu and Kashmir region last month.

The Taliban authorities on Monday, 1 September, 21025 confirmed that over 800 people lost their lives after a strong earthquake and multiple aftershocks collapsed homes onto sleeping families in a remote, mountainous region of the country.
The authorities , who confirmed that rescue operations have commenced on Monday, said he 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck just before midnight, rattling buildings from Kabul to neighbouring Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad.
According to them, more than 1.2 million people likely felt strong or very strong shaking, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS), which recorded at least five aftershocks throughout the night.
Casualties and destruction swept across at least five provinces.
Near the epicentre in eastern Afghanistan, around 800 people were killed and 2,500 injured in remote Kunar province alone, chief Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said.
Another 12 people were killed and 255 were injured in neighbouring Nangarhar province, while 58 people were injured in Laghman province.
In Wadir village in the hard-hit district of Nurgal, dozens of people joined the effort to pull people from the rubble of destroyed or severely damaged homes more than 12 hours after the initial earthquake.
The epicentre was about 27 kilometres (17 miles) from the city of Jalalabad in Nangarhar province, according to the USGS, which said it struck about eight kilometres below the Earth’s surface.
Such relatively shallow quakes can cause more damage, especially since the majority of Afghans live in low-rise, mud-brick homes vulnerable to collapse.
Some of the most severely impacted villages in remote Kunar provinces “remain inaccessible due to road blockages”, the UN migration agency warned in a statement .
The Taliban authorities and the United Nations mobilised rescue efforts, with the defence ministry saying at least 40 flight sorties had so far been carried out.
