Christmas Eve Fire Ravages Great Nigeria Insurance House On Lagos Island

BY NECHI NAECHE-ESEZOBOR—A fire outbreak at the Great Nigeria Insurance House on Martins Street, Lagos Island, on Christmas Eve destroyed property estimated to be worth millions of naira.

The Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, while confirming the incident said firefighters received a distress call at 4:41 p.m. and arrived at the scene within 12 minutes to control the raging fire.

She explained that the fire broke out at the Great Nigeria Insurance House on Martins Street and was affecting up to the fifth floor of the 25-storey building, having originated on the fifth floor before spreading downward.

The affected structure is mainly used as a warehouse for storing and selling clothing materials, with some corporate offices and retail shops also operating within the premises.

The incident was said to have occurred at about 5 p.m. on Tuesday, prompting an emergency response from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and other first responders, who battled to contain the blaze. No casualties were reported as at press time
