The Seme Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on Wednesday disclosed that within the last two months it intercepted 36 ‘Tokunbo’ vehicles, including five exotic cars and 695 bags of 50kg rice.
Acting Customs Area Controller, Mr Chedi Wada, explained that the Duty Paid Value (DPV) of the contraband was N163.4 million.
According to him, some unpatriotic Nigerians continued the evil act of smuggling in spite of the lockdown order by the Federal Government to curtail the spread of COVID-19,
“The result is the arrest of these spectacular items. Notable ones among them are; Mercedes Benz C300, Mercedes Benz GLK 350, Mercedes Benz GLK 350 4Matic and Toyota Highlander 2013 model.
“Other seizures are 695 bags of 50kg rice, 54,275 litres of petrol, 327 cartons of frozen poultry products, 36 units of used vehicles, 111 parcels of cannabis sativa and 996 general merchandise goods.
“Five suspects were arrested during the period under review, of which some were released on administrative bails, while others were handed over to NDLEA for further investigation,” he said.
The controller appealed to the general public to embrace legitimate means of livelihood and avoid smuggling.
