The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confiscated the international passport of former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, as part of an ongoing investigation into the alleged disappearance of a $490 million Abacha loot repatriated through a Mutual Legal Assistance (MLAT) arrangement.
According to a source familiar with the investigation, Malami has also been restricted from leaving the country for the next month. The source added that one of the conditions for his release on Saturday was a directive requiring him to report to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja every day for further questioning.
“The former minister may not travel out of the country except with the mutual consent of the EFCC or a High Court order,” the source said.
Malami has dismissed the allegations as fabricated, insisting that the truth would eventually come to light.
EFCC operatives, however, maintained that Malami must explain the whereabouts of the $490 million, emphasizing that he has not been accused of theft but is expected to provide full clarification on the handling of the recovered funds.
