Ex-Pension Boss, Maina To Spend 8 Years In Prison For Money Laundering

Abdulrasheed Maina

Former chairman of Pension Reform Task Team, Abdulrasheed Maina, has been convicted and sentenced by the Federal High Court, Abuja to 61 years imprisonment.

He was convicted for money laundering and stealing N2 billion belonging to pensioners.

Justice Okon Abang, who is currently reading the judgement in Abuja, held that the prosecutor, EFCC, has produced essential evidence through witnesses to prove beyond reasonable doubt that Maina is guilty of money laundering in the sum of N171,099,000.

He was found guilty of inducing staff of Fidelity Bank to open bank accounts for him without conducting the requisite due diligence.

The court, in a judgement that was delivered by Justice Okon Abang found Maina guilty of concealing his true identity as a signatory to accounts opened in two banks, namely UBA and Fidelity bank, by using the identity of his family members without their knowledge.

He held that the sentence would run concurrently, with effect from October 25, 2019.

The court ordered Maina and his firm to restitute about N2.1billion that was traced to their bank accounts, to the Federal Government, after which it ordered that the company should be wound up.

It also ordered the forfeiture of Maina’s two choice properties at Life camp and Jabi districts of Abuja, to the government, as well as the auction of a bulletproof car and a BMW 5 series car that was found on the premises of the convict.
