The Labour Party (LP) has declared its 2027 presidential ticket open, stating that no politician will be favoured in the process of picking aspirants.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, Abayomi Arabambi, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, stated that there shall be primary elections for its members who wish to lead the party’s quest in the 2027 presidential elections.

“There shall be primary elections in the Labour Party, and no aspirant will be favoured this time around,” Arabambi declared.

He described the selection of Peter Obi in 2023 as a blunder with lasting consequences and a betrayal of Nigerians, insisting that the party is set to correct its mistake ahead of the 2027 elections.

Recall that Peter Obi emerged as the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the last general election and came third in the election, according to the result declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), with victory in 12 states, including the federal capital territory.

However, Arbamabi questioned Obi’s loyalty to the party after he recently joined the coalition movement under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election.

Arabambi also dismissed the coalition actors, describing them as “Yahoo Yahoo politicians” who brought hardship in 2015.

“Instead of a leader with debt and discipline and demonstrable progress for national renewal, Nigeria got a populist, whose greatest skill is telling people what they want to hear. The 2027 election must not repeat this error, even as Peter Obi has defected from the Labour Party to ADC.

“Nigerians are wishing him well in that ungodly coalition because these are the same coalition that brought catastrophe on Nigerians between 2015 and 2023. Such a coalition must be rejected.

“We wish Obi well in his Yahoo Yahoo coalition, but to let him know that the Labour Party presidential ticket is now open to all Nigerians.

“There shall be a primary election this time around, and no aspirant would be favoured,” Arabambi said.
