The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC)on Monday reassured Nigerians that all Nestlé Infant Formulae currently approved for marketing in Nigeria are safe for consumption and are not part of the recall.
In a statement, the Agency clarified that the recall was prompted by the potential presence of cereulide, a heat-resistant toxin produced by certain strains of Bacillus cereus, which can cause nausea and vomiting when consumed. NAFDAC emphasized, however, that Nigeria is not affected by the recall.
According to the Agency, all Nestlé infant formula products currently approved for sale in Nigeria are safe for consumption and are not among the affected batches. NAFDAC confirmed that the SMA range sold in Nigeria is manufactured at the Nestlé Tuas Factory in Singapore and is duly registered with the Agency. The products include:
- SMA Gold 1 – NAFDAC Reg. No.: B1-2783
- SMA Gold 2 – NAFDAC Reg. No.: B1-2780
- SMA Gold 3 – NAFDAC Reg. No.: B1-2781
NAFDAC further reiterated that both the SMA and NAN infant formula ranges produced for the Nigerian market are not part of the voluntary and precautionary recall carried out in other countries.
The Agency said the public notice was issued as a precautionary measure in line with its statutory responsibility to keep Nigerians informed of emerging global food safety issues, even where the risk of local exposure remains minimal. It noted that risks associated with unauthorized importation, online purchases, or personal carriage of products during international travel cannot be completely ruled out.
NAFDAC assured Nigerians that it continues to maintain strict regulatory oversight through product registration, routine surveillance, and post-market monitoring to ensure that all food products, particularly infant nutrition products, meet approved safety, quality, and labeling standards.
Reaffirming its commitment to public health, especially the protection of infants and other vulnerable groups, the Agency stated that it would take immediate regulatory action if any product is found to pose a risk.
Members of the public were advised to rely on verified information from NAFDAC and other competent authorities. Anyone who encounters the recalled products is urged to discard them and report any suspected sale or distribution to the nearest NAFDAC office or via the toll-free line 0800-162-3322. Adverse events or side effects linked to the products should also be reported through NAFDAC’s e-reporting platforms on www.nafdac.gov.ng.
NAFDAC reassured Nigerians of its proactive stance and continued vigilance in safeguarding public health.
