No Threat of Mutiny in Nigerian Army — Military Authorities

The Nigerian Army has dismissed reports alleging that soldiers are threatening mutiny over salaries and allowances, describing the claims as false, misleading and deliberately sensational.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Army faulted an online publication that alleged discontent within the ranks, insisting that there has been no threat of mutiny at any time. It stressed that mutiny is a serious offence under military law and runs contrary to the values of discipline, professionalism and loyalty that define the Nigerian Army.

According to the statement, the report relied on anonymous and unverifiable sources circulated through non-official channels, which do not reflect the views, conduct or disposition of officers and soldiers. The Army noted that personnel are trained to channel grievances through established internal mechanisms rather than public platforms.

The Army also clarified that promotion increments constitute only one component of military remuneration, cautioning against presenting them as total earnings. It explained that soldiers’ pay packages include consolidated salaries, rank-based allowances, operational, field and hardship allowances, as well as other entitlements that vary based on deployment, qualifications and responsibilities.

It further stated that, in collaboration with the Armed Forces of Nigeria and relevant government agencies, structured welfare reforms are ongoing. These include periodic salary reviews, enhanced operational allowances, improved accommodation, medical care and insurance packages for personnel and their families.

The statement added that the Chief of Army Staff has initiated engagements with appropriate authorities to further improve troop welfare, noting that the discussions are already yielding positive outcomes.

Reaffirming the Federal Government’s support, the Army said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to the welfare and operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces amid evolving security challenges.

The Nigerian Army urged the public to disregard unfounded reports and rely on official communication channels for accurate information, stressing that it remains a cohesive, disciplined and professional force committed to its constitutional mandate.
