The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives – Federal Health Institutions Sector NANNM-FHI on Wednesday, 30 July, 2025 commenced their nationwide strike despite Federal government appealing to them not to embark on it, reports Business Today NG

According to the union, it’s action becomes necessary following the expiration of the 15-day ultimatum issued on 14 July, 2025, demanding improved welfare allowances, and better working conditions for nurses working in federal health institutions in the country.
speaking on Tuesday, 29 July, 2025, the National Chairman of the union, Rilwan Morakinyo, said the federal government failed to engage in fruitful discussions with the association during the 15- day ultimatum, hence they don’t have option than to embark on strike.
“As far as we are concerned , there has been no communication from the government to this moment. That is why we are saying the strike is going on, noting is stopping it.”
“Even if the government calls today or tomorrow, it won’t stop the strike.”
According to Morakinyo, the decision to embark on the nationwide strike was not the solitary decision of the leadership of the union but driven by groundswell of frustrations among members over long-standing neglect of the issues affecting the welfare of it members.
“The strike is initiated by the leadership of the union, it was initiated by the members, and they said, this is what we want,” he said.
