Panic gripped residents of Dutse, the Jigawa State capital after a decomposed human body was discovered on Kandahar Hill, opposite Dutse General Hospital.
The Jigawa State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Shi’isu Adam, who confirmed the development, identified the deceased as 37-year-old Ado Barau, popularly known as Jojo, from Kasarau Fagoji in Dutse metropolis.
Adam, who disclosed that said the deceased had long suffered from a mental disorder, added that the incident, reported to the police on September 16 at about 3:45 p.m., prompted detectives from Dutse Division to visit the scene.
However, due to the advanced state of decomposition and the foul odour, the body was buried at the site with assistance from the local government welfare department.
“The burial took place in the presence of the deceased’s relatives, representatives of traditional institutions, operatives from the DSS, NSCDC, FRSC, and members of the local community,” SP Adam stated.
The state police image-maker added that the deceased’s elder brother, Rabiu Shehu, alongside local leaders, confirmed that Barau had been battling mental illness and dismissed speculation that parts of his body were missing.
While urging the public to disregard fake news that could cause panic, emphasising the importance of vigilance and prompt reporting of suspicious activities, the state police publicistalso reassured residents of the Command’s commitment to transparency, professionalism, and the protection of lives and property.
Earlier, unverified reports had circulated in Dutse claiming that the deceased’s eyes were missing, with some residents linking the incident to the approaching political campaign season. Police have since debunked the claims.
