The Rivers State Government has announced that it is concluding plans to enrol its workforce in the Employees’ Compensation Scheme of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF).
Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Benibo Anabraba, disclosed this yesterday, when he received a delegation of the Executive Members of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Rivers State Council, in his office.
Anabraba explained that the State Government is critically reviewing the policies of the scheme, which, upon final approval by the State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, will provide medical care and rehabilitation for employees who become ill or sustain injuries in the course of their duties, and, in the case of fatal accidents, offer compensation to their beneficiaries.
“We have met with the management of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, and we are intentional about the commencement of the scheme in Rivers State”, he said.
He emphasized that workers’ welfare remains a top priority of the Fubara administration, noting that the scheme will ensure that workers injured or involved in accidents while performing their duties receive the necessary care and support, thereby promoting a stronger sense of security in service.
The SSG further stated that Governor Fubara is fully committed to ensuring the adoption of the scheme in Rivers State.
He added that the government will also strengthen partnerships with private-sector operators, especially in the construction industry, making NSITF certification a requirement to safeguard local workers and enhance workplace safety.
Anabraba also expressed displeasure over the indiscriminate parking of trucks and tankers along major roads across the state, describing it as a public nuisance that endangers road users and harms the environment.
He urged the TUC to sensitize its affiliate unions, including the Association of Shipping, Clearing and Forwarding Agencies; the Union of Tipper & Quarry Employers; and the Road Transport Employers Association, on the dangers of illegal parking and the importance of complying with state traffic and transportation laws.
He warned that the government may be compelled to take decisive action if such violations persist.
