The FCT Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, who made this disclosure on Tuesday through a press statement ,said the raid was part of ongoing efforts to curb the resurgence of banditry and kidnapping around border communities in the FCT, particularly in Bwari, Kuje, and Gwagwalada councils, where security agencies have recently intensified patrols.

According to Adeh, the operation was launched after credible intelligence from the Force Headquarters’ Technical Intelligence Unit indicated that a notorious bandit leader, identified as Idrisa, also known as “Mai Duna,” had concluded plans to launch simultaneous attacks on selected villages around the Byazhin forest axis.

“Acting swiftly on the intelligence report, on 10th October 2025, at about 9:00 p.m., the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit deployed tactical teams to mount an ambush along the suspected routes of the criminals,” the statement read.

At about 1:00 a.m. on October 11, the operatives reportedly intercepted two groups of armed bandits advancing towards the area, leading to a fierce gun battle that lasted about twenty minutes.

The police said the attackers were subdued and forced to retreat into the forest with gunshot wounds.

“Following the encounter, reinforcement was promptly deployed from nearby Police and Military formations, while additional police units secured the general area and blocked potential escape routes. A thorough search of the scene led to the recovery of: • One (1) AK-47 rifle with a defaced serial number, • One (1) magazine, and • Thirty (30) rounds of live 7.6mm ammunition, ” Adeh said in the statement.

The FCT police image-maker said the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, commended the operatives for their gallantry and quick response, noting that their action averted what could have been a major security breach within the capital territory.

“He further directed all medical facilities within the FCT and adjoining states to be on alert and report any person found with gunshot wounds to the nearest police formation immediately, ” the statement added.

Items recovered include one (1) AK-49 rifle with Breech No. N704983, three (3) magazines, seventeen (17) rounds of 47.62mm live ammunition, and three (3) rounds of 9.19mm live ammunition.

The suspect confessed to being the leader of a gang responsible for several violent crimes in Lagos.

He is currently in custody and assisting in the apprehension of other gang members.

A locally made pistol loaded with a live cartridge, two tricycles, an electric generator, and a vandalised and stolen streetlight pole were recovered from the suspects.

According to the command on February 17, 2025, at about 11:27 a.m., Police Operatives attached to the Unity Division of the Command, in collaboration with the Neighbourhood Watch Group, arrested 20-year-old Onyebuchi Ukwu and recovered a locally fabricated pistol loaded with one live cartridge.

It also disclosed that investigations are ongoing to apprehend his gang members, alleged to have been involved in criminal activities in the Nike axis of the Enugu metropolis.

In another operation, the police also arrested  Samuel Kalu, for allegedly stealing a Bajaj tricycle from where parked at Edenwu Street, New Haven, Enugu.

The statement added that he confessed to the crime, while the tricycle earlier stolen on February 17, 2025, was recovered and identified by its owner.

Operatives from New Haven Division, on February 15, 2025, while on routine patrol, intercepted and arrested 23 years  Ibrahim Ayuba and recovered a blue-coloured Kemage Generator valued at N700,000.00.

Upon interrogation, the suspect confessed to having stolen the generator, while the owner identified the generator as his. The two suspects have been arraigned in court and remanded in the Correctional Custodial Centre.

Similarly, Police Operatives attached to the Emene Division, while on routine patrol along Nkwubor/Adoration Road, Enugu, on February 9, 2025, intercepted a Bajaj tricycle without a registration number. The rider, Arinze Onyia (male, aged 33), was arrested. During interrogation, the suspect could not provide a satisfactory account of the tricycle’s ownership.

Further investigation revealed that the tricycle had been reported stolen from where it was parked at Adoration Ground, Enugu, on February 12, 2024.

He will be arraigned in court once investigations are concluded. Furthermore, on February 7, 2025, police operatives attached to the Enugu Area Command leveraged credible intelligence and arrested three male suspects, namely: David Biome, Emmanuel Philip, and Abdullahi Yusuf, for vandalizing and stealing solar streetlights installed by the Enugu State Government around Okpara Square, Enugu. One of the stolen streetlight poles was recovered from them. Further interrogation led to the arrest of two male criminal receivers, Lawal Mudan and John Alex, at New Artisan, Enugu, on February 10, 2025. The suspects have been arraigned in court and remanded at the Correctional Custodial Centre.
