The Federal Government through the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has injected 640MW of additional transmission capacity through the commissioning of six substations in Kano and Katsina State respectively marking a significant leap forward in improving reliable energy access nationwide.
On Wednesday in Kano State, the Federal Government commissioned four (4) transmission substations at Walalambe, Kumbotso, Dakata and Dan-Agundi respectively, adding 544MW of wheeling capacity to Kano State and the grid.
In Katsina State on Friday, the Federal Government again commissioned two (2) new 60 MVA, 132/33 kV transmission substation in Kankia Local Government Area of Katsina State, injecting an additional 96 megawatts (MW) of transmission capacity into the national grid.
Together, these infrastructure milestones bring the total additional transmission capacity commissioned within the week to 640MW.
Delivering his remarks at the commissioning of the Katsina substation on Friday, the Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe credited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his steadfast commitment to reforming the power sector.
“Mr. President’s Renewed Hope Agenda recognizes that economic ambition requires dependable infrastructure.”
“By supporting vital investments such as this, the administration is laying stronger foundations for enterprise, employment, and prosperity across every part of the country,” Tegbe stated.
The Minister explained that the newly commissioned facility will substantially strengthen the network’s capacity to distribute available electricity across Katsina State and its environs, directly boosting both productive commercial activities and household welfare.
He also charged residents of the community to act as custodians of the public infrastructure.
“Report suspicious activities promptly to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) or security agencies. These assets serve your businesses, your neighbors, and your children; safeguarding them protects your community’s future,” the Minister said.
In his address, Katsina State Governor, Mallam Dikko Umaru Radda hailed the completion of the project as a landmark investment in the state’s power infrastructure.
He noted that steady and reliable electricity will act as a catalyst for economic growth, industrial development, and improved public service delivery.
Governor Radda expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for approving the project, while commending the Federal Ministry of Power and the TCN for their dedication to its successful delivery.

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ending the persistent blackout and aim for a twenty four hours electricity in the state.

He said the Lagos State Government is ready to work with the critical stakeholders to actualise the targeted increase in available electricity supply to about 3,500 megawatts (MW) through coordinated action on generation, transmission, distribution and metering.

Governor Sanwo-Olu made the commitment on Thursday at the Lagos State High-Level Strategic Power Town Hall, held at Lagos House, Marina, to critically assess the state’s electricity situation and develop practical solutions to the challenges affecting generation, transmission and distribution.

The high-level engagement was attended by stakeholders across the electricity value chain, including regulators, power distributors, transmission operators, asset managers, investors and representatives of the Federal Government and Lagos State Government.

The town hall meeting focused on how Lagos can leverage its enormous electricity demand, existing infrastructure and emerging state electricity market to attract investment and deliver more reliable power to homes, businesses and industries.

Speaking at the town hall meeting, Governor Sanwo-Olu called for stronger coordination, smart metering, better data management, enforcement and revenue assurance as panacea to the perennial challenges facing the sector. He said stakeholders must work together to build consumer confidence and attract investment.

Also speaking, the Minister of Power, Mr. Joseph Tegbe, who was represented by the Director of Distribution Services in the Federal Ministry of Power, Engr. Baba Mustapha, said Lagos requires more than 6,000MW, but currently receives far less from the national grid.

He stressed that increased generation would have limited impact without adequate transmission and distribution infrastructure, identifying gas supply, generation, transmission capacity, distribution bottlenecks and metering as key priorities.

The Special Adviser to the President on Power and Chairman of the Presidential Taskforce on Power Sector Reset and Restoration, Dr. Rilwan Lanre Babalola, said the challenge before Lagos and Nigeria was no longer simply about generating more electricity, but about building a functional and sustainable electricity market.

He said the country must move away from a system where government continuously acts as buyer, guarantor and absorber of losses across the electricity value chain.

Babalola explained that the proposed Clean Lagos Electricity Market (CLEM) could provide a practical model for transforming Lagos’ huge electricity demand into a structured and investable market through demand aggregation, bilateral contracting, open access, payment assurance and transparent settlement.

He said stakeholders must be able to establish where the demand and customers are, where electricity and gas will come from, whether the network can deliver the power, the efficient tariff and how payments will move transparently to generators, network operators and gas suppliers.

Babalola also highlighted the importance of decentralisation following constitutional amendments and the Electricity Act, which have opened the way for states to establish and regulate their electricity markets.

Also speaking, the Lagos State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Abiodun Ogunleye, said the town hall meeting was convened to bring an end to what he described as the culture of blackout in Lagos.

He said Lagos State would develop clear action points and establish a baseline for measuring progress at the proposed six-month review.

On tariffs, Ogunleye stressed that improved electricity supply must accompany payment, insisting that consumers should not be made to pay for darkness

He explained that achieving the target would allow more feeders to operate and provide increased electricity to homes and industries that require reliable power for productive activities.

Ogunleye also disclosed that newly commissioned substations would contribute to the state’s power infrastructure, while the government would work with distribution companies to monitor selected feeders and measure improvements in electricity supply.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission, Temitope George, identified constraints in generation and transmission, energy theft, vandalism and non-payment of electricity bills as major challenges affecting the sector.

George urged electricity consumers to pay for the power they consume, warning that non-payment distorts the electricity market and ultimately affects the ability of other consumers to receive adequate supply.

She said Lagos State is also exploring embedded power generation to complement electricity from the national grid and reduce overdependence on the national system.

The town hall ended with a commitment by stakeholders to translate the discussions into concrete action points, establish measurable baselines and periodically assess progress.

‎Nigeria’s efforts to scale up delivery of seven million smart electricity meters and close its metering gap received a boost on Thursday, with the flag-off in Abuja of POWER FORCE, a training programme that will produce 5,000-meter installers across the country.
‎
‎The Power Force programme is being implemented under the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI), launched by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2023. The flag-off ceremony, held at the headquarters of the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN), also featured the unveiling of the first batch of selected applicants, who will undergo a three-week intensive practical and classroom training in Abuja.
‎
‎Close to 220,000 submissions were received from interested young Nigerians across the country during the application period.
‎
‎Dignitaries in attendance at the event included the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe; the Minister of Youth Development, Ayo Olawande; the Executive Secretary of the Presidential Metering Initiative and Special Adviser to the President on Oil and Gas, Olu Arowolo Verheijen; and the Project Director of the PMI, Obafemi Solebo. The Governor of Kwara State and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), who also chairs the PMI Board, His Excellency Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, was represented at the event by Mr Edmund Obiora Nnaji, Executive Director, Finance and Administration at the NGF.
‎
‎Other attendees included the Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), Mr Ayo Gbeleyi; the Managing Director of NAPTIN, Mr Ahmed Bolaji Nagode; and the Managing Director of the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA), Mr Adesayo Olusegun Michael.
‎
‎In his address, Governor Abdulrazaq said, “PMI is not just about fixing the finances of the power sector through metering. It is also about impacting the lives of young Nigerians, through training and skills development.” He called on fellow governors to explore “supporting this Power Force initiative with a view to expanding the pool beyond the initial five thousand trainees being targeted.”
‎
‎Power Minister Tegbe said, “Behind every successful metering programme must stand thousands of competent, certified and dedicated technicians. The 5,000 young Nigerians being trained under this initiative will become the backbone of Nigeria’s smart metering workforce.”
‎
‎The Power Force initiative, he added, “demonstrates that our electricity reforms are not merely about equipment and technology; they are equally about creating opportunities, building human capital and securing livelihoods.”
‎
‎He commended the Association of Meter Manufacturers of Nigeria (AMMON) for withdrawing a court action it had instituted against the meter deployment programme, noting that “that singular decision has removed a significant obstacle to the accelerated deployment of electricity meters across the country.”
‎
‎Youth Minister Olawande said Power Force is directly supporting his Ministry’s “One Youth, Two Skills” initiative. “This is not just the launch of a training programme; it is about creating jobs and opportunities for Nigerian youths to contribute to national development,” he said.
‎
‎He added, “President Tinubu’s administration has demonstrated that Nigeria’s federal ministries, departments and agencies can have the force of collaboration in making sure the dividends of democracy get to everybody in the country.”
‎
‎Special Adviser Verheijen described the PMI as the largest metering programme in the history of Nigeria, established under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu “to solve one of the biggest barriers to a reliable electricity sector: ensuring that every Nigerian pays only for the electricity they actually use.”
‎
‎She added, “One young installer cannot transform Nigeria. But five thousand can inspire fifty thousand. And fifty thousand can inspire millions more. That is how movements begin. One opportunity. One person. One act of service at a time.”
‎
‎Following the Abuja launch, the Power Force training will expand to various centres across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. Upon completion, trainees will receive formal certification by NEMSA as qualified meter installers who have met national and international competence and safety standards.
