BY SUNDAY SAMUEL—The Lagos State Police Command has strongly refuted viral media reports claiming that the late Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP Khan Salihu, was kidnapped by criminals prior to his demise, describing the publication as a malicious fabrication.

In a statement released to clear the air, the Command clarified that the senior officer died following a brief illness and was never at any point abducted or targeted by criminal elements.

According to the police registry, DCP Salihu had complained of feeling unwell and was immediately rushed to an undisclosed hospital for urgent medical evaluation. Regrettably, clinical personnel confirmed him dead upon arrival.

The Command expressed deep concern over the spread of unverified information, stating that the false publication violated the ethics of responsible journalism and inflicted unnecessary trauma on the grieving family and colleagues of the deceased.

“The report is entirely false, misleading, and a complete fabrication with no basis in fact whatsoever. At no time was he abducted, kidnapped, or involved in any incident remotely connected to criminal activity,” the statement read.

Frowning at the lack of professional verification by the media platform involved, the Command demanded an immediate retraction of the report alongside a formal public apology.

The public has been urged to completely disregard the false narrative and rely strictly on official channels for verified security updates, as the Command continues its mourning period for the late senior officer.

The Ogun State Police Command on Sunday  refuted a viral video circulating on social media which purportedly shows armed men operating within a forest in Ogun State, describing it as false, misleading, and not originating from the state or anywhere in Nigeria.

In a statement, the Command said preliminary investigations and credible fact-checks revealed that the footage actually originated from Kenya, where it was recorded during an operation against cattle rustlers involving a General Service Unit (GSU) drone. It added that the video, which shows individuals cooking in a bush setting, was first uploaded in 2022 and has now been recirculated with a false narrative aimed at causing panic and misinformation.

The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, strongly condemned the spread of the video, warning that such unverified content is capable of causing unnecessary fear and undermining public confidence in security agencies. He stressed that there is no intelligence or operational report indicating the presence of such criminal activity in any part of Ogun State.

Ojajuni assured residents that the Command remains committed to safeguarding lives and property through intelligence-led policing, strategic deployments, and sustained security operations across the state.

He urged members of the public to disregard the viral video and refrain from sharing unverified information capable of inciting panic or disturbing public peace, adding that citizens should rely only on official channels for credible security updates.

The Commissioner also called on residents to remain law-abiding and continue supporting the police with timely and credible information, warning that the spread of fake or inciting content would not be tolerated.

Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activities through the Ogun State Police Command emergency lines: Gateway Shield (Toll-Free): 0800 000 9111 and Emergency Lines: 0906 283 7609, 0912 014 1706, 0915 102 7369, 0708 497 2994.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has said that his ministry is collaborating closely with the United States government to promote and strengthen press freedom in Nigeria.

Idris stated this in an interview with newsmen shortly after he met with the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Richard Mills in his office on Wednesday.

“The ambassador talked about some issues that he thinks we need to address, to improve in the area of press freedom and we have also given him assurance on what we are doing and he recognises the fact that we are doing a great job in ensuring that Nigerian press is not just free but also one of the freest around the world. I know there are some challenges here and there and we are working on those areas to ensure that all of us enjoy what is called press freedom, which is an important part of any viable democracy,” he said.

The Minister emphasized the Tinubu administration’s high priority on press freedom and assured the government’s commitment to further enhancing media freedom in the country.

He said they also discussed how to forge a common front in the fight against misinformation and disinformation in the country.

“He talked about misinformation, disinformation, fake news, and all that stuff, and we discussed that. We all believe collectively that there’s no way you can build a virile society when you promote fake news and don’t take the issue of misinformation and disinformation seriously,” he said.

In his remarks, Ambassador Mills said his meeting with the Minister is to discuss ways of strengthening the existing relationship between the US government and the Ministry, especially regarding press freedom and journalists’ rights.

He recognized the effort of the Minister in championing the cause of press freedom and journalists’ rights in Nigeria.

The US Envoy, who acknowledged the huge challenge posed by disinformation, especially in democracies around the world, said they have also shared thoughts and ideas with the minister on how to tackle the challenge.
