BY CHILDIMA AGU—In a bid to improve human capital development in West African Insurance industry, the West African Insurance Companies Association (WAICA), in partnership with Posterity Thinkers and Blue Alliance, has launched a new Masterclass Sustainability Training Programme.

The announcement was signed by Davis Yasere on behalf of WAICA’s executive leadership.

The training, aimed at building the skills of insurance professionals across the region to manage climate risk and unlock new opportunities.

The programme is designed to equip insurers with the knowledge, tools and practical skills needed to navigate the evolving landscape of sustainability, climate risk and climate finance.

Posterity Thinkers will serve as lead partner, providing strategic leadership, coordination, institutional strengthening and climate-finance expertise, while Blue Alliance will act as technical partner, delivering specialised expertise in sustainability reporting, IFRS S1/S2, ESG, carbon accounting, decarbonisation and net-zero strategies.

WAICA noted that the timing of the initiative reflects growing regulatory and market pressures facing the sector. IFRS S1/S2 and other sustainability reporting standards are shifting from voluntary best practice to regulatory expectations across WAICA member jurisdictions, while climate change is increasingly affecting underwriting, claims, investments, asset values and business continuity.

Early capability-building, the Association, noted can strengthen insurers’ competitiveness, attract investment and open the door to innovative insurance solutions.

The programme is built around seven strategic objectives: building foundational capacity in sustainability and reporting; facilitating readiness for IFRS S1/S2 and emerging regulations; strengthening climate-risk management; embedding ESG into strategy, governance and investment; developing climate-finance capacity; enabling competitive positioning against international standards; and creating long-term resilience beyond one-off training.

Describing the training as a platform for lasting impact that will support market leadership, member retention and growth, regulatory advocacy, international standing, regional integration, revenue diversification and institutional strengthening.

The training will draw on a range of reference frameworks, including central banks’ directives, IFRS S1/S2, GSE ESG standards, the GHG Protocol, PCAF and ISO 50002:2014.

Linkage Assurance Plc has formally unveiled DiasporaCare+, an innovative insurance solution designed to help Nigerians living abroad provide structured insurance protection for their , assets, liabilities and  valued interests back home.

The product was formally unveiled by the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Linkage Assurance Plc, Mr. Daniel Braie, as part of the company’s broader strategy to deepen insurance penetration, expand access to protection and develop solutions around the evolving needs of Nigerians at home and abroad.

A Bridge Between the Diaspora and Home

DiasporaCare+ recognises a simple reality: while millions of Nigerians live and work outside the country, they continue to maintain strong family, financial and economic ties with Nigeria.

The solution therefore provides a dependable insurance framework through which Nigerians abroad can protect what matters to them at home.

Speaking at the unveiling, Mr. Daniel Braie, Managing Director/CEO of Linkage Assurance Plc, described DiasporaCare+ as an expression of the company’s commitment to customer-focused innovation and greater financial inclusion.

“DiasporaCare+ is about giving Nigerians abroad greater confidence that the people and interests they care about at home can have access to meaningful insurance protection. We are extending the value of insurance beyond geographical boundaries and providing a dependable bridge between our diaspora community and home.”

Four Solutions, One Protection Ecosystem

DiasporaCare+ brings together four complementary areas of protection, creating a broader insurance ecosystem around the needs of Nigerians in the diaspora and their connections at home.

The four components are:

1.Diaspaora Travel Insurance
Repatriation of mortal remains to Nigeria .

2. Diaspora Home Protection
Fire & Special Perils , Burglary & Housebreaking , Personal Accident & Liability .

3. Diaspora Auto Insurance
Comprehensive , Restricted Cover , Third party & Third Party Plus .

4. Diaspora Holiday Injury Insurance
Accidental Bodily Injuries , Tropical Illness .

Explaining the thinking behind the product, Dr. Imo O. Imo, Chief Strategy & Product Officer, Linkage Assurance Plc, said DiasporaCare+ was developed from a deliberate effort to understand the protection gaps confronting Nigerians living abroad.

“The thinking behind DiasporaCare+ was to move beyond simply selling an insurance policy to the diaspora. We asked a more fundamental question: how can insurance help Nigerians abroad protect the people, assets and commitments that continue to connect them to home? DiasporaCare+ is our response a practical protection ecosystem built around those real-life needs.”

He added that the product reflects Linkage Assurance’s strategy of identifying emerging customer segments and developing relevant solutions around their specific risks and expectations.

Deepening Insurance Beyond Borders

The unveiling of DiasporaCare+ reinforces Linkage Assurance Plc’s commitment to innovation, customer-centricity and inclusive insurance, while opening new opportunities to deepen engagement with the Nigerian diaspora community.

The company will continue to build strategic partnerships and distribution channels that make DiasporaCare+ easily accessible to Nigerians across key diaspora markets.

BY NKECHI NAECHE-ESEZOBOR—Nigerian Insurance industry regulator, the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), on Thursday in Abuja launched the Insurance Sector Strengthening Programme (ISSP), a new initiative aimed at accelerating the transformation of the industry and Nigeria in general.

The Commissioner for Insurance/CEO, NAICOM, Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, disclosed this today in Abuja during the official unveiling, he said the programme responds to persistent challenges facing the sector, including low insurance penetration despite Nigeria’s large economy, widespread underinsurance, limited public awareness of insurance products, and untapped opportunities among women, youth, and small businesses.

According to him, the  ISSP is built around six pillars: Advocacy and Policy, Awareness and Education, Capacity Building, Gender Inclusion, Youth Engagement, and MSME and Value Chain Development.

He noted that the programme places strong emphasis on public education and financial literacy, arguing that insurance uptake is closely tied to consumer trust and understanding.

He further  highlighted plans for professional training to strengthen technical expertise across the industry, alongside targeted efforts to bring more women and young people into the insurance space through tailored products and career opportunities.

He said the initiative would extend risk protection to Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), which he described as key drivers of employment and economic productivity but currently underserved by insurance.

The Commissioner linked the ISSP to the broader Nigeria Insurance Industry Reform Agenda (NIIRA 2025), stating that it supports goals such as deepening penetration, enhancing professionalism, strengthening consumer protection, and increasing the sector’s contribution to economic growth.

While pledging NAICOM’s continued support for innovation, Omosehin stressed that growth must be matched by strict adherence to prudential standards, transparency, and prompt claims settlement, adding that market expansion would not be permitted at the expense of solvency or public trust.

He described the launch as the beginning of a new chapter for insurance in Nigeria, one built on collaboration among regulators, operators, professional bodies, development partners, and the media to expand access and rebuild public confidence in the sector.

Oriyon International Limited has partnered Leadway Assurance to launch the Economic Empowerment of Women and Youth in Livestock Agriculture (EEWYLA) training programme at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Oyo State.

The programme, which commenced  17 August 2026, brings together women and young livestock producers for structured training, cooperative development and greater access to formal financial and market systems.

Leadway Assurance is the programme’s insurance partner, providing the risk protection component designed to help participating producers protect livestock assets and reduce the financial impact of unforeseen losses.

The initiative aligns with a broader national effort to modernise Nigeria’s livestock economy. The Federal Government’s National Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy targets an increase in the sector’s contribution to the economy from approximately US$32 billion to at least US$74 billion by 2035, with finance, data management, animal health, infrastructure, and women and youth participation among the areas identified for intervention.

Speaking at the launch, Oluwafumilayo Amina Momoh-Orimoloye, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Oriyon International Limited, said the programme was built around the need to ensure that livestock producers, particularly women and young people, are not excluded from the opportunities emerging within a more formal and technology-enabled livestock sector.

“There is enormous productive capacity among women and young livestock farmers, but many still operate without the structures, records, market connections and institutional support that can help them grow. EEWYLA is about changing that. We are bringing producers together, improving their technical and business capabilities and creating a pathway that connects what happens on the farm to finance, insurance, technology and ultimately the market. Our partnership with Leadway also reflects our belief that sustainable growth in livestock agribusiness must be matched with the right protection. As we equip producers with training, traceability, financial literacy and market access, it is equally important that they are able to manage the risks that could threaten that progress. Bringing insurance into the programme helps create a stronger foundation for participants to build business resilience, and recover quickly from financial shocks”

EEWYLA is designed to organise individual smallholder livestock producers into structured cooperative clusters while equipping them with knowledge in livestock production and breeding, cooperative governance, financial and digital literacy. The programme is being implemented within a broader ecosystem involving Oriyon International Limited, which coordinates physical livestock production, aggregation and farm-level implementation, and Rumer Technologies Limited, which provides the digital infrastructure for producer and livestock identification, traceability and transaction records.

Fatona Ayoola, Global Head, Agricultural Risk Solutions at Leadway Assurance, said the combination of producer education, formal organisation and better data can help create a more sustainable foundation for livestock insurance.

“Insurance becomes more effective when there is better visibility around the asset being protected. Bringing producers into structured cooperatives, improving livestock management practices and creating verifiable records around animal health, ownership and movement can strengthen both risk assessment and claims management. Our engagement with EEWYLA is therefore not simply about providing an insurance product. It was about helping participants understand that protecting an agribusiness should be part of building it. As these producers improve their skills and expand their operations, we want them to be better positioned to absorb shocks, recover and continue producing.”

For Leadway, the increasing availability of verified livestock and producer records presents an opportunity to strengthen the way risks are understood and managed within a segment of agriculture that has historically been difficult to insure at scale.

About Leadway Assurance

Leadway Assurance is one of Nigeria’s foremost non-banking financial services groups, offering diversified solutions across insurance, pensions, health, and asset management. Founded in 1970, the company has built a legacy of trust and innovation, serving millions of individuals and businesses across Nigeria and West Africa.

About Oriyon International Limited

Oriyon International Limited is the physical production and aggregation arm of an integrated agribusiness ecosystem building Nigeria’s first end-to-end, digitally traceable halal livestock value chain — from smallholder producer to processed, export-compliant product. Oriyon’s mandate is production and aggregation: goat and small-ruminant ranching, cooperative-based supply consolidation, and the development of mechanised, AAA-classified halal processing infrastructure. Its digital arm, Rumer Technologies Limited (“Rumer”), supplies the trust, traceability and payments layer that makes every animal, transaction and product batch verifiable from farm gate to end consumer.

BY NKECHI NAECHE-ESEZOBOR—The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) of Nigeria and Ghana’s National Insurance Commission (NIC) have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening regional cooperation aimed at advancing insurance innovation and promoting sustainable economic growth across Africa.

Learn This was highlighted during a working visit by Ghana’s Commissioner for Insurance, Dr. Abiba Zakariah, to NAICOM headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday. The visit underscored the growing collaboration between the two regulatory institutions and their shared vision for a more integrated African insurance market.

Welcoming the Ghanaian delegation, the Commissioner for Insurance and Chief Executive Officer of NAICOM, Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, emphasized the pivotal role of insurance in driving economic development and enhancing financial resilience across the continent.

According to him, achieving meaningful poverty reduction in Africa will remain a challenge without significantly increasing insurance penetration, noting that insurance provides critical protection against risks and supports inclusive economic growth.

“Insurance remains a key pillar of economic development. To effectively tackle poverty and build resilient economies across Africa, we must expand insurance coverage and deepen public confidence in the sector,” Omosehin said.

In her remarks, Dr. Zakariah expressed appreciation for the warm reception and reiterated Ghana’s commitment to fostering stronger partnerships among African insurance regulators.

She noted that enhanced collaboration would create opportunities for innovation, facilitate greater market access, and accelerate financial inclusion across the continent.

“Regional cooperation among insurance regulators is essential to unlocking the full potential of Africa’s insurance industry. By working together, we can promote innovation, strengthen regulatory frameworks, and expand access to insurance services for millions of Africans,” she stated.

Discussions during the visit focused on deepening cross-border regulatory cooperation, promoting the adoption of InsurTech solutions, and exploring initiatives that would support the growth and modernization of the insurance industry in both countries and across the region.

The engagement reflects the shared determination of Nigeria and Ghana to leverage innovation and regulatory collaboration to build a more resilient, inclusive, and integrated African insurance landscape capable of supporting long-term economic development.

The visit is expected to further strengthen ties between the two regulatory bodies and pave the way for enhanced cooperation in addressing common industry challenges and emerging opportunities within Africa’s evolving insurance ecosystem.

BY NKECHI NAECHE-ESEZOBOR— Unitrust Insurance Company Limited is set to strengthen its presence in Nigeria’s retail insurance market as part of a strategic shift inspired by insights gained at the recently concluded African Insurance Organizations Conference in Cairo, Egypt.

Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the company, Mr. Adedayo Arowojolu, said the conference underscored the urgent need for insurers across Africa to expand access to insurance products through innovation, collaboration, and technology-driven solutions.

Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Arowojolu revealed that Unitrust Insurance, traditionally focused on corporate business, is now looking to develop products tailored to individuals and small businesses in a bid to contribute to the growth of insurance penetration in Nigeria.

“For us as a company, one of the key lessons we are taking away from this conference is the need to review our entire processes and product offerings,” he said. “We have concentrated largely on corporate business over the years, but going forward, we need to develop products that are suitable for individuals and strengthen our personal lines of business.”

According to him, discussions at the two-day conference highlighted the importance of leveraging technology to reach underserved populations and make insurance more accessible and affordable.

Arowojolu noted that despite Nigeria’s population of more than 220 million people, insurance penetration remains below one per cent, creating significant opportunities for insurers willing to innovate and address the needs of the mass market.

“The importance of extending insurance products to SMEs and individuals cannot be overemphasized,” he said. “The best way to achieve this is by using technology to reach those who currently have little or no access to insurance services.”

He added that affordability remains a critical factor in encouraging wider adoption of insurance products, especially in an environment where many consumers prioritize more immediate economic needs.

“If insurers can provide products that are relevant to people’s circumstances and financial realities, more Nigerians will begin to see the value of insurance and embrace it,” he said.

The conference also focused on fostering greater collaboration among African insurers, pooling resources, and reducing capital outflows from the continent, themes Arowojolu described as essential to the long-term growth and sustainability of the insurance industry.

He further noted that discussions around the role of insurance in sustaining businesses reinforced the need for increased awareness and education about the benefits of insurance protection.

As Unitrust Insurance evaluates the conference’s key recommendations, the company plans to explore new ways of delivering affordable insurance solutions to retail customers while leveraging technology to broaden its market reach.

“We need to let more people understand the value that insurance brings,” Arowojolu said. “By adapting some of the ideas and lessons from this conference, we believe we can play a greater role in deepening insurance penetration and expanding financial protection for Nigerians.”

This version makes Unitrust’s planned expansion into the retail and personal insurance segment the main news angle while weaving in the broader conference discussions as supporting context.

BY NKECHI NAECHE-ESEZOBOR—Buying and managing insurance policies in Nigeria is about to get as simple as sending a text message, thanks to a new digital initiative aimed at putting complete insurance coverage directly onto smartphones.

CBI Partnering Insurtech Limited, a newly licensed web aggregator and subsidiary of Baywood Holdings Limited, has unveiled an app-driven, web-based marketplace built to dismantle the traditional bottlenecks of the local insurance sector.

Speaking at a media briefing, Executive Chairman Emperor Chris Baywood Ibe explained that the platform was designed with the modern mobile consumer in mind, ensuring that insurance is easy to discover, purchase, and manage from anywhere.

“Whether you are at home, in the office, or traveling across the country, insurance should be entirely accessible via your mobile devices,” Ibe stated.

“For decades, adoption in Nigeria has been constrained not by an absence of products, but by accessibility, complexity, and a lack of customer confidence. We are changing that by bringing the entire ecosystem onto a single digital interface.”

To achieve this, the company is deploying an ecosystem powered by generative AI, advanced algorithms, and interactive chatbots. While clarifying that CBI Partnering Insurtech is a technology marketplace rather than an insurance underwriter, Ibe emphasized that the platform will handle everything from policy creation to seamless claims support right on a user’s phone.

The move comes at a critical time for the industry. With a newly assented Federal Government policy driving digital financial inclusion, Ibe issued a strong warning to legacy underwriters still operating on paper-heavy, offline business models, stating that companies must innovate or face corporate extinction within the next five years.

To ensure consumers have immediate access to a wide variety of mobile-ready products, CBI Partnering Insurtech announced it will provide technical “hand-holding” to traditional insurance companies and Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs).

The tech firm plans to build custom Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for operators lagging behind digitally, allowing them to connect directly to the mobile platform.

This collaborative framework aims to give retail consumers, micro-businesses, and corporate organizations instant, transparent access to insurance protection at the swipe of a finger

BY NKECHI NAECHE-ESEZOBOR—The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), on Monday granted an operational licence to CBI Partnering Insurtech Ltd, making it the first fully licensed insurtech company in Nigeria.

The approval marks a major milestone in the ongoing digital transformation of Nigeria’s insurance industry and reflects NAICOM’s growing support for technology-driven insurance solutions aimed at improving accessibility, efficiency and financial inclusion across the country.

The team of NAICOM and representatives of CBI Partnering Insurtech Limited after the presentation of operational license.

Insurtech companies use digital technology to simplify insurance processes such as policy purchase, claims management, customer service and risk assessment. The emergence of licensed insurtech operators is expected to deepen insurance penetration in Nigeria, where a large percentage of the population remains uninsured.

NAICOM said the licensing aligns with its regulatory reform agenda under the Nigeria Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025 framework, which seeks to modernise the sector, encourage innovation and strengthen consumer protection.

According to the Commission, the approval of CBI Partnering Insurtech Ltd demonstrates its readiness to embrace emerging technologies while maintaining strict regulatory oversight within the industry.

NAICOM also stressed that innovation in the insurance sector must operate within established legal and ethical standards to safeguard policyholders and ensure market stability.

Industry stakeholders believe the development could open the door for more technology-based insurance companies to enter the Nigerian market, potentially driving competition, expanding insurance access and improving service delivery nationwide.
