Troops of Sector 7, Operation ENDURING PEACE (OPEP), in collaboration with the Nigeria Police, Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), Forest Guards and local hunters, on January 28, 2026, launched a swift, intelligence-driven operation that crushed a kidnappers’ hideout in Badurum Kasa Forest, Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, leading to the rescue of eight abducted victims unharmed.

Acting on credible intelligence, the joint security team advanced deep into the forest, forcing the kidnappers to abandon their captives and flee, in what authorities described as a decisive blow against criminal elements operating in the area.

The troops, operating in synergy with the Zango Kataf Police Area Command, Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), Forest Guards and local Hunters, advanced decisively into the forest. At about 1759 hours, contact was made, triggering panic among the kidnappers who, unable to withstand the superior force and precision of the joint team, abandoned their captives and fled in disarray into the surrounding bushes.

The successful operation let to the rescue of eight kidnapped victims unharmed and successfully reunited with their families. Those rescued include Mrs Rashida Musa (19), Mrs Hafsat Nuhu (18), Mr Zakari Saleh (52), Miss Hasiya Yahaya (13), Mr Ahmed Yahaya (14), Mr Ibrahim Saiba (11), Miss Salma Yahaya (14) and Mr Sophan Idris (18).

This decisive action stresses the Nigerian Army’s robust inter-agency synergy, agile ground manoeuvres and relentless resolve to protect lives, secure critical routes and deny criminal elements the freedom of action.

The Kaduna State Police and local authorities on Monday dismissed reports that over 100 worshippers were abducted during a church service in Kurmin Wali, Kajuru Local Government Area, describing the claims as falsehoods spread by mischief-makers seeking to create unrest.

The officials described the reports as false and deliberately circulated by individuals seeking to create panic and disrupt the relative peace in the area. Security operatives who visited the scene found no evidence of any attack, and local leaders confirmed that the congregation remained safe.

Addressing journalists after the State Security Council meeting at Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Rabiu, challenged anyone to provide the names of the alleged victims or other details, warning that those spreading rumours risk facing the full wrath of the law.

Supporting the police’s position, Kajuru Local Government Chairman, Dauda Madaki, said security operatives immediately responded to the alleged incident but found no evidence of any attack.

“We visited the church, spoke to the village head, Mai Dan Zaria, and the youth leader, Bernard Bona, who both confirmed that no such attack occurred. I challenge anyone to provide the names of the kidnapped individuals, but no one has come forward,” Madaki said.

He further suggested that the rumours may have been sponsored by people dissatisfied with the relative peace Kajuru has enjoyed under the current administration. Residents were urged to remain calm, continue their daily activities, and report any suspicious movements to security agencies.

Also weighing in, Commissioner of Internal Security and Home Affairs, Sule Shauibu (SAN), said interactions with religious leaders, including the CAN chairman, confirmed that the circulated reports were completely false. He reaffirmed that the Kaduna State Government maintains zero tolerance for criminality.

Armed bandits abducted dozens of worshippers from two churches in Nigeria’s Kaduna state, police said on Monday, while a senior church leader put the number of those missing at more than 160.

Kaduna state police said gunmen armed with “sophisticated weapons” attacked the two churches in Kurmin Wali, a forest community in Afogo ward, at about 11:25 a.m. on Sunday. They said officers were still trying to confirm how many people were taken.

A police spokesperson said the area was remote and difficult to reach due to bad roads, making it challenging to obtain reliable information in the immediate aftermath of such attacks.

The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in the northern part of the country, Reverend John Hayab, told Reuters by phone that 172 worshippers were kidnapped, and that nine later escaped, leaving 163 still held.

“Information came to me from the elders of the churches that one hundred and seventy‑two worshippers were abducted while nine escaped,” Hayab said.

Initial figures in Nigeria often vary widely after mass kidnappings. Security agencies typically give conservative early numbers, while local community and religious groups sometimes cite higher tallies. A similar pattern occurred during the abduction at a Catholic school in Kaduna State in a previous incident.

Police said troops and other security agencies had been deployed to the area and that efforts were under way to track the abductors and rescue the captives.

Northwest Nigeria has seen a surge in mass kidnappings by armed gangs operating from forest enclaves, attacking villages, schools and places of worship.
