The Delta State Police Command has released a statement addressing a widely shared video on social media that appears to show a police officer fatally shooting a young man in Effurun—an incident that has triggered strong public reaction and concern.

In the statement, the Command acknowledged the unlawful killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi, stating that it took place on April 26, 2026. It explained that officers from the Effurun Area Command had acted on intelligence suggesting the deceased was intercepted while allegedly trying to ship a package said to contain a Beretta pistol along with four rounds of ammunition.

According to the release, the team leader, ASP Nuhu Usman, violated Force Order 237 and established procedures of the Nigeria Police Force by opening fire, which resulted in the man’s death.

The statement added that the officer has since been detained, formally questioned, and moved to Force Headquarters in Abuja, where he will face the Force Disciplinary Committee for prompt disciplinary action and possible prosecution.

Reacting to the incident, Commissioner of Police Yemi Oryeniyi condemned the act and reassured the public that justice would be pursued. He reiterated the Command’s strict stance against misconduct, recklessness, and unlawful actions. He also expressed sympathy to the victim’s family and called on residents to stay calm while the legal process unfolds.
