The Federal Government has directed the Nigeria Immigration Service to revoke and deactivate passports issued to individuals who have formally renounced their Nigerian citizenship.

The directive, issued by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, applies to persons whose renunciation has been officially approved by the President, as part of efforts to safeguard the integrity of Nigerian citizenship and strengthen border security.

According to a statement issued by the Minister’s Special Adviser on Media, Babatunde Alao, the directive affects only those whose renunciation has received formal approval from the President.

The Minister stated that, in line with the Constitution, anyone who renounces Nigerian citizenship is no longer recognized as a citizen and therefore loses the right to possess official national documents, including a passport.

Tunji-Ojo noted that the action forms part of ongoing reforms designed to protect the credibility of Nigerian citizenship and curb identity-related fraud.

He further stated that the government remains committed to improving systems that enhance border protection and support lawful travel.
