The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said in a statement that the government is working with the Borno and Yobe State Governments, as well as NEMA and SEMA, to provide humanitarian support to families affected by recent military operations against terrorists in the affected states.

He affirmed that the Federal Government has ordered a full and independent investigation into the incidents to review intelligence, targeting, and execution processes, and to address any gaps while ensuring accountability where necessary.

He said the protection of civilian lives remains a core obligation of the Armed Forces, which remain committed to greater precision, accountability, and sustained operations until lasting peace is achieved.

He further stated that the precision counter-terrorism strike on confirmed terrorist targets in the Jilli axis of Gubio Local Government Area of Borno State on April 11, 2026, conducted by the Nigerian Air Force under Operation HADIN KAI, was a deliberate, intelligence-led operation and not an indiscriminate attack.

According to him, the operation followed sustained intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance indicating that the Jilli axis was being used as a terrorist marketplace. Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, had earlier stated that the area had been officially closed five years ago due to insurgent control, describing it as a known hub for terrorist activity.

Civilians were urged to strictly observe security advisories, avoid restricted areas, and cooperate with security agencies.

The Federal Government also called on the media to exercise responsibility in reporting security matters, stressing that unverified reports can mislead the public, embolden terrorists, and undermine national security efforts.

He also highlighted government efforts against terrorism, including convictions of several Boko Haram and ISWAP suspects, with sentences ranging up to life imprisonment, including individuals found guilty of providing material support to insurgents.

The government extended its deepest condolences to the families of those affected and expressed sympathy to those injured.

According to a statement released via it official X account by Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the troops engaged the attackers in a fierce exchange of gunfire and successfully repelled them, forcing the terrorists to flee while maintaining control of the location.

However, tragedy struck after the encounter when the Commanding Officer, while moving to the scene to assess the situation and check on his troops, drove into an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). The explosion destroyed his vehicle, killing him and six other personnel.

The statement noted that his actions reflected “the highest traditions of military leadership,” describing him as an officer who embodied courage, selfless service, and a commitment to leading from the front. It added that his decision to move toward the battlefield despite lingering danger demonstrated exceptional bravery and dedication to his men.

Operation HADIN KAI expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing the fallen personnel as heroes who paid the supreme price in service to the nation. It said their sacrifice would remain etched in the memory of the Armed Forces and the country.
