Although details of his death are still sketchy as the time of filing this report, the news of Rufai, popularly addressed as Dodomayana’s was confirmed in a post on the Super Eagles’ official X page on Thursday, 3 July, 2025.
“We mourn the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, a giant of Nigerian football and 1994 AFCON champion. Rufai, fondly known as “Dodo Mayana, was a towering figure in Nigerian football history whose contributions would never be forgotten.
“Forever in our hearts, Dodo Mayana. We mourn the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, a giant of Nigerian football and a 1994 AFCON champion,” the statement said.
Dodomayana, the Lagos born goalkeeper started his professional career with Stationary Stores of Lagos in 1980.
The legendary keeper had 65 caps for the Super Eagles, manning the goalpost for Nigeria in two FIFA World Cups in 1994 and 1998.
