Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the Minister, Lere Olayinka, said in a statement on Wednesday, that an operation code-named “Operation Sweep Abuja of miscreants, street beggars/traders, scavengers and other criminal elements” has commenced in the FCT.

The statement read; “In line with the Abuja Environmental Protection Act, and other relevant laws, the FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike has directed the immediate evacuation of miscreants, street beggars and traders, scavengers and other criminal elements from the FCT.

“Our nation’s capital should be a secured symbol of pride and beauty, not a site for street beggars and scavengers, most of whom are agents of criminal elements.

“To achieve this, a Joint Task Force, comprising security agencies and relevant FCT SDAs have been deployed to apprehend any persons found begging, scavenging, loitering or engaging in other acts inimical to the well-being of the residents. Arrangements have been made to profile them and hand them over to their home state governments.

“Security of lives and properties of residents of the FCT is of paramount importance to the government, we must all join hands to achieve a safer Abuja.

It was learnt that the exercise is part of the crusade to rid the state of miscreants and street begging by the state government.

According to credible source in the state Ministry of Social Welfare Development in Ilorin, Kwara State capital on Friday, 27 June, 2025, theywere arrested along Post Office, Sulu Gambari road, Ibrahim Taiwo road, Asa Dam road, Geri Alimi roundabout, Offa Motor park and Tanke areas of Ilorin metropolis.

They were sentenced by a senior Majistrate, Jumoke Bello, following their arraignment after the raid on major streets of the state capital, led by the state Commissioner for Social Welfare and Development, Dr Mariam Nna Fatimoh, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Correctional Service and the state Ministry of Justice on Tuesday.

Dr.Fatimoh, decried the anti-social behaviors of the destitutes and the street beggars in Ilorin and the government reservation areas, disclosed that the beggars constitute a threat to the security of the state as they often breach environmental laws.

The commission accused them of being “informants to kidnappers, armed robbers and assassins” hence, the decision by the state government to clamp down on street begging, just as she also warned them to relocate from the restricted areas in the state or face the consequences of their actions.

Reacting to the development, the Assistant Controller of the Correctional Service, Okunola Adebayo, said those sentenced would embark on community service to serve as deterrent and instill the culture of diligence and hard work in the bid to reform them to become useful citizens.

Chairman of FIDA, Barrister Funke Balogun, in her own reaction, decried the vulnerability of the underage children already introduced to street begging.

Balogun, however, commended the state government for the evacuation of the destitutes and street beggars and the ongoing efforts to improve security in the state.
