BY NKECHI NAECHE-ESEZOBOR—The new management of African Alliance Insurance Plc has promised sound solvency management and absolute transparency as the company officially returns to full business operations following a major regulatory restructuring.

Speaking recently in Lagos, the newly appointed Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Ayobami Olakunle Ogunkeye, stressed that the pioneer indigenous life underwriting firm has pledged to uphold the highest standards of accountability and customer-centric service.

According to Ogunkeye, a seasoned turnaround expert, the company’s revival strategy is built directly upon these promises to ensure long-term viability and safeguard the interests of all policyholders.

The company’s renewed assurances follow a decisive regulatory intervention by the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), which began in October 2024.

Prompted by severe liquidity pressures, operational disruptions, and a substantial backlog of unpaid claims, NAICOM had appointed an Interim Management Board to stabilize the 66-year-old institution.

During the intervention, the interim board successfully cleared over 75 percent of the company’s accumulated legacy liabilities.

Critical capital was unlocked through the competitive sale of a 49 percent stake in PAL Pensions, while trapped dividend funds were secured to clear up to 15 months of annuity arrears.

Additionally, the team transparently transferred the firm’s admitted annuity portfolio to an underwriting institution to secure uninterrupted payments for beneficiaries, upgraded internal ICT infrastructure, and completed vital forensic and actuarial reviews.

With these corrective milestones achieved, NAICOM Commissioner for Insurance, Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, formally certified the company fit to resume full operations and officially handed control over to a newly constituted board and management team.

Although independent operations have resumed, African Alliance will remain under active regulatory oversight to monitor its ongoing recapitalization progress and solvency compliance closely.

The newly formed leadership structure is headed by Board Chairman Rear Admiral Anthony Odogba Isa. Joining him on the board are Andrew Ubochi as Executive Director, Technical, alongside non-executive directors Chief Boniface Chinedu Moore (SAN), High Chief Olabode Akeem Mustapha, Ataraire Gideon, and Harrison Ogalagu.

Addressing the firm’s diverse stakeholders, Ogunkeye stated that the lessons learned during the recent period of hardship have deeply reinforced the company’s resolve to develop appropriate corporate governance structure

He assured existing policyholders that their trust would be honoured without compromise, while inviting prospective clients to approach the revitalized insurer with full confidence in its financial positioning and operational capacity.

Following the change in the Executive leadership of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, the House of Representatives today in Abuja charged the Corporation, which is currently led by Gbenga Alade as Managing Director/CEO to continue to innovate and adopt best practices in asset recovery, management, transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the quest to recover the total outstanding debt of nearly N5trillion owed AMCON by some obligors.

Hon. Eze Nwachukwu Eze, the Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Banking and Other Ancillary Institutions, declared at the Corporate Head office of AMCON earlier on Tuesday when he led the House Committee on its 2024 oversight visit. It is the first oversight visit of the Honourable Eze-led Committee to the Corporation since the new AMCON EXCO assumed office in February.

The Chairman said that once transparency, accountability, and efficiency remain the cornerstones of AMCON’s operations, as legislators, the committee members will be committed to providing the necessary support through appropriate legislative frameworks and oversight functions to ensure AMCON fulfills its recovery mandate effectively.

Again Hon. Eze added, “Moreover, we recognize that AMCON cannot achieve its mandate in isolation. Collaboration with the National Assembly, which this Committee represents, other financial institutions, regulatory bodies, and other stakeholders is crucial. As representatives of the people, we are committed to fostering an enabling environment that supports AMCON’s efforts and promotes the stability and growth of our financial system.

“As we navigate through the current economic landscape, marked by global uncertainties, and domestic challenges, the role of AMCON becomes even more critical. Resolving non-performing loans, recovering debts, and managing acquired assets are key to ensuring the stability and resilience of our banking sector. It is essential that AMCON remains steadfast in its mission, adopting innovative strategies and leveraging technology to enhance its operations.

“AMCON, since its inception, has played a pivotal role in stabilizing the Nigerian financial system. In the aftermath of the 2009 global economic crisis, AMCON was established to address the non-performing loan crisis that threatened the stability of our banking sector. Today, as we reflect on the journey thus far, we acknowledge the significant strides made by AMCON in fulfilling its mandate. This visit aims to ensure that AMCON operates within the legal framework established by the National Assembly and achieves its objectives effectively and efficiently.”

He added that the visit to AMCON is part of their legislative functions, as enshrined in sections 62, 88, and 89 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), which empowers the National Assembly to oversight all Government Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs) and Government owned Enterprises (GoEs) for judicious utilization of Government Funds and Order 21(2) of the House Standing Orders, Eleventh Edition (as amended), which placed AMCON under the oversight jurisdiction of the Committee.

Earlier in his welcome remarks, the AMCON MD/CEO who hosted the Committee with his Executive Directors – Dr Aminu Mukhtar Dan’amu, and Mr Adeshola Lamidi among other senior staff of the Corporation told the Committee that despite the shaky start-off model, the Corporation, with the support of the National Assembly, has made considerable recoveries.

Alade said, “To date, the Corporation has made recoveries in the sum of N1.960 trillion. Of the total recovery, cash recovery represents 43%, sale of bridged banks 13%, sale of proprietary shares 11%, clawback & repurchases 9%, sale of property assets & rentals 9%, investment income 7%, while others represent about 7%.”

The AMCON boss who took the members down memory lane of what led to the creation of AMCON and the many battles the Corporation had to deal with since its establishment informed that AMCON has disposed of proprietary assets worth about N651billion from inception to date. In addition, Alade said the Corporation has made a total repayment of N2.929 trillion to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) from 2013 to 2023, which of course includes contributions to the Sinking Fund by other Deposit Money Banks (DMBs), and AMCON recoveries.

He said with the coming of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) in 2021, NNPC Ltd has today transformed into an integrated commercial entity that is focused on transparency and accountability, two core values that are vital towards the Company’s quest to float an Initial Public Offer (IPO) at the stock exchange.

“Over the last five years, the NNPC Ltd has been pushing the agenda of transparency, accountability and performance excellence. I am glad to say that we are setting very high standards, and this is a journey that we are all committed to going forward,” Ogunleye added.

He called on all gas players to sustain the advocacy for gas as a major energy source that will be utilized to develop the economic and industrial fortunes of the continent.

He said gas is a top priority for NNPC Ltd because the Company is at the forefront of Nigeria’s gas commercialization efforts and flare elimination.
