BY NKECHI NAECHE-ESEZOBOR—The U.S. Embassy in Abuja has announced the suspension of visa appointment services, advising applicants to monitor their email for updates on rescheduled dates.

However, visa processing operations at the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos remain unaffected and continue as normal. Services for American citizens are also still available, particularly in emergency situations and by scheduled appointment.

The development follows a decision by the U.S. Department of State on April 8, 2026, authorizing the departure of non-emergency U.S. government personnel and their family members from the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, citing worsening security conditions.

Meanwhile, the U.S. government has maintained its overall travel advisory for Nigeria at Level 3: Reconsider Travel, while warning that certain states remain under Level 4: Do Not Travel due to heightened security risks.

Applicants have been directed to refer to official communications and email notifications for further updates on visa scheduling and consular services.
