BY NKECHI NAECHE-RSEZOBOR (WASHINGTON D.C.)—Nigeria’s health sector is witnessing a major turnaround, following the Federal Government’s ongoing macroeconomic reforms, according to Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, Minister of State for Finance.
Speaking at the Health Works Leaders Coalition Roundtable on the sidelines of the 2025 IMF/World Bank Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C., Dr. Uzoka-Anite said the Federal Government has increased allocation to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare by nearly 60% in the 2025 Appropriation Act.
She said the development underscores the administration’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery and improving access for all Nigerians.
“We have made remarkable progress in expanding access and strengthening financing mechanisms. The Federal Government remains fully committed to ensuring that Nigerians enjoy quality healthcare under the Renewed Hope Agenda,” she said.
Fiscal Reforms Powering Health Sector Growth
The Minister outlined key fiscal reforms driving progress in the sector, including the Excise Tax on tobacco, alcohol, and sugar-sweetened beverages, with revenues earmarked for Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
She also disclosed that the government has zero-rated medical equipment and drugs for VAT and secured concessionary financing through the HOPE operation to support critical health projects.
Dr. Uzoka-Anite emphasized the need for a national compact to coordinate and align fiscal resources with Nigeria’s health priorities.
Nigeria Gains Global Recognition
She commended the World Bank for recognizing Nigeria as a priority country in showcasing its UHC Compact and selecting it to lead the Africa Initiative for Access to Medicines and Local Manufacturing (AIM 2030).
The Minister also praised the leadership of Professor Ali Pate, Minister of Health, and other stakeholders for their collaboration in strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system.
“This progress reflects President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes improving the health and well-being of every Nigerian,” Uzoka-Anite stated.
Commitment to Sustainable Growth
Reaffirming the government’s broader reform agenda, the Minister said progress in the health sector demonstrates how sound economic policies can deliver social impact and inclusive growth.
She expressed optimism about Nigeria’s economic trajectory and called for continued collaboration with development partners to advance growth, productivity, and equitable development.
