The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has invited business mogul Aliko Dangote to appear before a special panel of investigators in Abuja on Monday over a petition he submitted alleging corruption against Ahmed Farouk, former Managing Director of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
A source close to the Commission confirmed on Sunday that the ICPC has constituted a panel of seasoned investigators to handle the matter, following directives from its Chairman, Dr. Musa Aliyu (SAN), to give focused attention to the petition.
Dangote is expected to appear in person or be represented by his lawyer, Ogwu Onoja (SAN), and to submit evidence in support of his claims as the investigation formally begins.
In the petition, Dangote accused Farouk of corruption and misappropriation of funds, alleging that he spent over seven million dollars without verifiable lawful income on the education of his four children in elite schools in Switzerland. He also alleged that the former NMDPRA boss undermined domestic refining by colluding with international traders and oil importers through the continued issuance of import licences.
Although Farouk has since resigned his position, the ICPC said the investigation would proceed, noting that his resignation does not affect the probe. Dangote is seeking Farouk’s arrest, investigation, and prosecution for allegedly living above his means while in public service.
Confirming the development, ICPC spokesperson John Okor Odey said the Commission received the formal petition on December 16 through Dangote’s lawyer and assured that the agency would conduct a fair and thorough investigation, giving all parties the opportunity to be heard.
