The Federal Government has ordered the immediate commencement of palliative repairs on the Lagos–Ota–Abeokuta Road to address critical failures and ease traffic congestion.

The directive was given by the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, during an inspection of the federal highway linking Lagos and Ogun states. He explained that while about 22 kilometres of the road were assessed, urgent intervention would concentrate on roughly 18 kilometres of the most severely damaged sections.

Umahi said the Federal Government is already rehabilitating about 60 kilometres along the corridor, with construction being carried out in phases based on the level of urgency. He attributed the persistent road failures to unresolved concession issues as well as engineering design errors during earlier construction works.

According to the minister, repair works will begin immediately, largely at night, and will focus on damaged sections that hinder the free flow of traffic. He added that failed low-lying areas would be reconstructed with concrete to ensure long-term durability.

Umahi noted that the Ota-bound carriageway has suffered more extensive damage compared to the Lagos-bound side. He disclosed that a second phase of the project would include full resurfacing of the road, replacement of bridge expansion joints, and the installation of solar-powered streetlights.

The minister assured motorists that once construction is completed, the concessionaire will take responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the road.
