BY NKECHI NAECHE-ESEZOBOR—The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is set to play a central role in the rollout of a unified emergency response system following the approval of 112 as the country’s nationwide emergency contact number by the National Economic Council (NEC).
As part of the directive, the NCC, alongside the Office of the Vice President, will spearhead a joint implementation framework involving multiple agencies to ensure a seamless and coordinated response structure across Nigeria.
The decision was reached during the 157th NEC meeting, conducted virtually under the leadership of Vice President Kashim Shettima. The move aims to streamline emergency communication and eliminate delays often associated with fragmented systems.
Speaking on the development, the Vice President emphasized that the introduction of a single emergency line is crucial in addressing urgent situations where time is critical. He noted that during crises such as accidents, security threats, natural disasters, or health emergencies, citizens require immediate assistance rather than procedural delays.
According to him, the initiative goes beyond system improvement and reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives. He stressed the need for a reliable, easily accessible number backed by a responsive and well-coordinated support system.
While acknowledging that the emergency number already exists, the Vice President pointed out that the focus now is on harmonization, effective deployment, operational guidelines, public sensitization, and building confidence in the system.
He further described the Council as a key platform where both federal and state governments must translate national development goals into measurable outcomes. He urged members to prioritize decisions that directly improve the welfare of citizens, emphasizing that real impact—not meetings—will define success.
In addition to the emergency communication initiative, the Council reviewed progress on the upgrade of police training facilities nationwide. The report, presented by a committee led by Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, received commendation for its progress so far.
NEC also directed the Ministry of Finance to fast-track the release of remaining funds for the project and advised that the first phase of implementation should reflect equitable coverage across all geopolitical zones.
The NCC’s leadership in coordinating the emergency number rollout signals a renewed effort to build a responsive, efficient, and citizen-focused emergency management system across the country
