U.S. Clarifies: Visa Approval Does Not End Security Screening Process

The United States Embassy has stated that anyone applying for a visa, including Nigerians, remains under ongoing background and security checks even after their visa has been granted, no matter the category of visa involved.

This was shared in a statement posted on Monday via the U.S. Mission in Nigeria’s official X account.

The embassy explained that screening is not a one-time process. It applies to all applicants regardless of location or visa type, and continues throughout the entire process—from submission and evaluation to approval, and even after the visa has been issued for as long as it remains valid. The aim is to confirm that travellers continue to meet the conditions required to enter the United States.

It also cautioned that overstaying a visa could negatively affect future chances for other applicants seeking entry.
