COVID-19: SUNU Group Supports Lagos State Ministry Of Health With ₦15 Million Medical Equipment And PPE

BY NKECHI NAECHE-ESEZOBOR—As part of her contribution to the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic in the state, a foremost Pan-African Insurance Group, SUNU Assurances Nigeria and SUNU Health Nigeria, both subsidiaries of the SUNU Group, have donated medical equipment and Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) to the Lagos State Ministry of Health.

The donated items which include Personal Protection Equipment, goggles, masks, and gloves all worth the sum of ₦15 million were handed over to Mr. Olajide Razak, the Lagos State Ministry of Health medical warehouse manager, who received the items on behalf of the state.

Present at the handover was the Chairman of SUNU Assurances Nigeria, Mr. Kyari Abba Bukar, who presented the items to Lagos state, 

“It is important to protect the people at the frontline, the healthcare workers battling this pandemic. They are the ones handling the patients. They are saving lives”, Mr. Bukar said.

Also present were other top executives, MD. SUNU Assurances Nigeria, Mr. Samuel Ogbodu, and MD. SUNU Health Nigeria, Dr. Patrick Korie.

Speaking on the choice of donated items, Dr. Korie noted that it was the desire of the SUNU Group to contribute to efforts of the Lagos state healthcare workers who are at the frontline battling the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr. Samuel Ogbodu further emphasized the availability of insurance products such as Group Life insurance to protect the lives and livelihood of the brave health workers at the forefront of the battle against this pandemic.

The SUNU Group is committed to safeguarding the well-being of healthcare workers with global donations of medical equipment and Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) being made to Ministries of Health across the 15 African countries it operates in. This commitment is backed by continuing efforts to actively find new ways to deepen its support to governments in its fight against COVID-19.

SUNU Assurances Nigeria Plc http://sunu-group.com/en/home was incorporated as Equity Assurance Nigeria on December 13, 1984, and was licensed to underwrite all classes of general business. The company operates with a recently increased authorized share capital and shareholders fund. The company is a corporate member of the West African Insurance Company Association (WAICA) and the Nigeria Insurers’ Association (NIA), the official umbrella of registered insurance companies in Nigeria, as well as The Africa Insurance Organisation (AIO). 

The company changed its name from Equity Assurance Plc to SUNU Assurances Nigeria Plc with due approval from the shareholders and its regulator, National Insurance Commission (NAICOM). The approval was dated 29th March 2018 and a new license was issued by NAICOM.

The name change was necessitated as a result of SUNU Group’s (a foremost Pan-African Insurance Group), recent acquisition of majority stake in Equity Assurance Plc., With operations in 15 African countries and 25 office locations spanning West and Central Africa, this acquisition positions SUNU Assurances Nigeria Plc., to leverage SUNU Group’s vast network of knowledge capital, financial strength, and technical resources in our quest to differentiate our offerings and service standards in the Nigerian marketplace.

In addition to strengthening the company’s balance sheet, this strategic investment and name change also provide SUNU Assurances Nigeria Plc. with critical organizational capabilities & competencies which are being harnessed to create and deliver value to our esteemed brokers and clients.

This new name reflects its pan African presence as a full-fledged member of the SUNU Group. The company continues to operate in its current structure, and other than the name change, there is no change in management as we keep providing tailored-made products and better service on which SUNU Group has built its reputation across Africa.
