EFCC Warns Nigerians of Rising Impersonation, Fake Raids

BY SUNDAY SAMUEL—The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a public alert over a growing wave of criminal activities carried out by individuals impersonating its officers across the country.

According to the Commission, intelligence reports reveal that fraudsters are deploying increasingly sophisticated tactics to tarnish its image and exploit unsuspecting Nigerians.

One such tactic involves gangs operating around popular eateries and entertainment spots in major cities. These individuals reportedly ambush young people leaving these venues, falsely accuse them of internet fraud, and forcibly collect their valuables. Victims are sometimes taken to locations designed to resemble EFCC offices, with the suspects dressed in fake uniforms to appear legitimate.

In another development, the EFCC disclosed that some itinerant criminals are targeting motorists by stopping vehicles based on number plate identification. These suspects, often armed, intimidate drivers and extort money under false allegations.

The Commission also warned about a rise in online impersonation, where fraudulent content creators stage fake EFCC raids. These dramatizations often include scenes of forced entry, such as broken doors and windows, which the EFCC described as misleading and uncharacteristic of its operations. Authorities fear such content could mislead the public and wrongly implicate the agency in unlawful conduct.

The EFCC urged Nigerians to exercise caution and critically assess claims or content aimed at discrediting the Commission. It emphasized that all its operations follow established procedures and that there are official channels for reporting misconduct or lodging complaints.

Reaffirming its commitment to combating economic and financial crimes, the Commission called on the public not to allow the actions of impersonators and fraudsters to undermine confidence in its work.
