The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Wednesday presented cheques worth ₦2.17 billion to 1,574 beneficiaries and next-of-kin of deceased police officers.

The funds were paid under the Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare Schemes, covering policy years from 2015 to 2025.

The well -attended ceremony took place on Wednesday at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, with members of the management team, insurance stakeholders and beneficiaries in attendance.

Speaking at the ceremony, the IGP said the payment also included recoveries of outstanding claims that had been pending for close to a decade.

Egbetokun, while noting that the exercise marks the 11th disbursement since he assumed office, added that the total amount paid to families of fallen officers during his tenure has now exceeded ₦24.2 billion, benefiting 9,735 families.

The Nigerian Police boss, who described the exercise as a solemn duty of remembrance and responsibility, added that the Force is redesigning its welfare architecture to be stronger, transparent and fully digitised to ensure prompt payment of entitlements.

Egbetokun commended the Force Insurance Unit for diligence, the insurance companies for meeting obligations, and the ministry of police affairs for guidance, just as he also thanked President Bola Tinubu for what he described as “unwavering support” to police welfare initiatives.
