Gunmen on Thursday attacked Layin Danauta in Kuyello village, Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State and killed nine people and injured several others.
A traditional ruler in Birnin Gwari, who confirmed the incident Friday, said the attack occurred on Thursday evening when the gunmen invaded the community in large numbers.
Zagozola Makama, who disclosed the development on his x handle on Friday, quoted the traditional ruler to have said the attackers, wielding high-calibre weapons, opened fire on residents, killing nine people on the spot, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
According to him, the bandits also kidnapped an unspecified number of villagers and destroyed several properties before fleeing into the bush.
He added that the corpses of the victims were being prepared for burial in accordance with Islamic rites, while the injured are currently receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.
The incident comes after several months of a peace deal between local authorities and bandit groups operating in the Birnin Gwari area.
