BY NKECHI NAECHE-ESEZOBOR—-57-year-old Happy Osahon,  a Civil Engineer after a boring 14-year career in a Lagos-based construction company decided to resign and start up his personal business.

Through his wife’s brother, he picked interest in transportation and logistics business and so went ahead to acquire a fleet of trucks, which he uses to transport goods for merchants from Lagos to all over Nigeria.

After purchasing a truck worth about N7.2 million the dealer advised him to get a comprehensive Insurance Policy which he reluctantly placed with Mutual Benefits Assurance Plc.

The first year, second and third years after renewing his policy nothing happened to any of his trucks. Towards the end of the third year, he started considering going for just third-party cover since there had not been an accident and it was looking like a waste of money.

A few weeks before his policy expires, one of his trucks, while on its way from Ibadan, the unexpected happened: a fatal accident involving his truck and a Toyota Corolla, 2005 model, left his truck damaged and the Toyota Corolla was badly damaged.

There was no loss of life anyway, but occupants of the Toyota Corolla car sustained several degrees of injury and were rushed to the hospital.

Two things ran through his mind; “will the insurance company be willing to fix the damaged car and repair my own truck?  Where will I get money to fix this car if the insurance company refuses to fix it?”

While at the hospital, he called the Mutual Benefits Assurance hotline, where he was asked to fill out the online claims form and relate what happened, and that was how the claims process began.

To his greatest surprise, he was told that his policy covered the medical bills of the injured, and after proper documentation, his damaged truck and the Toyota Corolla were fixed within a few days. Osahon was overwhelmed that insurance could help him come out of the crisis.

According to Osahon, “Before now I thought an insurance certificate was only useful for avoiding the trouble of law enforcement agents on the road. I always renew it every year, but I didn’t know with a fraction of the value of my truck, insurance could cover me and the other motorists that my trucks damaged their cars.”

Following the swift response by the claims department to his claims, Osahon has gone ahead to purchase a life Assurance policy for himself and his family because MUTUAL BENEFITS is a reliable brand.
