The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released a Revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election, following adjustments introduced by the newly enacted Electoral Act, 2026.

The Commission had initially scheduled the Presidential and National Assembly elections for Saturday, 20th February 2027, and the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections for Saturday, 6th March 2027. These dates have now been revised to ensure compliance with the updated legal framework.

According to a statement by Malam Mohammed Kudu Haruna, Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, released on INEC’s official X account, the new election schedule is as follows:

  • Presidential and National Assembly Elections: Saturday, 16th January 2027
  • Governorship and State Houses of Assembly Elections: Saturday, 6th February 2027

Key Pre-Election Milestones

  • Party Primaries and Dispute Resolution: 23rd April – 30th May 2026
  • Presidential & National Assembly Campaigns: From 19th August 2026
  • Governorship & State Assembly Campaigns: From 9th September 2026
  • End of Campaigns: 24 hours before Election Day

Political parties are urged to strictly adhere to these timelines, with INEC affirming that it will enforce compliance as required by law. The full Revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities is available on INEC’s official website and communication channels.

Rescheduling of Osun Governorship Election

In addition, the Osun State Governorship election, initially scheduled for Saturday, 8th August 2026, has been rescheduled to Saturday, 15th August 2026. The Commission noted that while some pre-election activities in Osun and Ekiti have already been conducted, all remaining processes will follow the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026.

INEC emphasized that the revised dates are fully consistent with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), and called on all stakeholders to cooperate to ensure peaceful, credible, and inclusive elections that reflect the will of the Nigerian people.
