As part of measures to reduce Japa syndrome in Nigeria’s institutions of higher learning, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has disclosed voting N110 billion to train medical personnel and introduce advanced simulation technologies across tertiary institutions.
The Chairman, Board of Trustees of TETFund and former Katsina State Governor, Aminu Bello Masari, made this disclosure at the commissioning of eight multi-billion naira projects at the Federal University of Technology, Babura (FUTB) in Jigawa State, on Tuesday, I July, 2025.
The projects were executed under the Fund’s Special High Impact Intervention programme.
According to Masari, the fund has been refocused to support the training of health professionals and the deployment of modern simulation tools as part of the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“Beginning in 2025, N110 billion has been allocated to improve the training of medical personnel and introduce cutting-edge simulation technology—addressing the urgent shortage of healthcare professionals across the country,” he said.
The former governor disclosed that the investment will span five years, targeting public tertiary institutions and aiming to strengthen medical education, reduce medical tourism, and stem the exodus of health professionals abroad.
“This strategic investment will be maintained over the next five years as part of a broader effort to revitalise the health sector… We will continue to work closely with our beneficiary institutions to ensure these interventions translate into lasting, transformative outcomes for national development,” Masari added.
TETFund BoT also revealed that from 2021 to date, TETFund has allocated N11.36 billion to FUTB for infrastructure-related projects, with about 75.4 per cent of the funds already accessed and utilised by the university.
“The Federal University of Technology, Babura, is one of four specialised universities established in 2021 by the Federal Government. Since then, it has benefited from Annual, Special, Zonal, and High Impact intervention lines of TETFund,” Masari explained.
He disclosed that the newly commissioned projects at the institution were executed at the cost of N5.8 billion, adding that FUTB is well-positioned to assert itself as a leader in research, innovation, and technological advancement.
