BY SUNDAY SAMUEL—The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old man, Ogunwande Sodiq, over an alleged case of rape and threat to life in the Iganna area of the state.
The arrest followed a report by the father of the 18-year-old survivor, who alleged that the suspect unlawfully broke into his daughter’s room, threatened her with a knife, and forcefully assaulted her.
Police authorities say the suspect is currently in custody as investigations continue, with assurances that justice will be pursued in line with the law.
Following the report, the survivor was promptly rescued and taken to a medical facility, where she received appropriate medical care as well as socio-psychological evaluation and support. The prompt medical attention ensured her safety and well-being while the police initiated immediate action to apprehend the suspect.
Subsequently, the suspect was arrested and taken into custody. He has confessed to the crime and is cooperating with the police, facilitating the ongoing investigation. To preserve the integrity of evidence, detectives from Iganna Division visited the scene, took photographs, and recovered exhibits, including a knife and the affected bedsheet, which were secured as evidence.
In view of the sensitive nature of the case, the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, has directed that the matter be transferred to the Command Gender Desk, Ibadan, for discreet and thorough investigation, ensuring due process and careful handling. The suspect will be formally charged to court upon conclusion of the investigation.
The Commissioner of Police condemned in strong terms the act of sexual violence and threat to life, describing it as heinous, barbaric, and unacceptable. He assured that the suspect will face the full weight of the law, while reaffirming the Command’s unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and dignity, particularly those of women and other vulnerable persons.
The Command further urges the public to remain vigilant and to promptly report cases of sexual violence and other criminal acts to the nearest police station, reinforcing the partnership between the police and the community in safeguarding lives.
