BY NKECHI NAECHE-ESEZOBOR—The Nigerian Senate on Thursday passed a bill establishing the Nigerian Police Force Pension Board.

The bill, titled “Police Pension Board (Establishment) Bill,” sponsored by Senator Binos Yaroe (PDP, Adamawa South), seeks to exempt police personnel from the Contributory Pension Scheme under the Pension Reform Act of 2014.

The proposed legislation — “A Bill for an Act to Establish the Nigerian Police Force Pension Board Charged with the Responsibility of Administering the Pension Scheme for Personnel of the Force and to Exempt the Force from the Application of the Contributory Pension Scheme under the Pension Reform Act, 2014, and for Related Matters (HB. 979)” — has passed its third reading.

Once assented to by the President, the law will create a dedicated Police Pension Board to oversee retirement benefits, gratuities, and all pension-related matters for serving and retired police officers.

The bill aims to address long-standing grievances among police personnel regarding delays, inequities, and administrative bottlenecks associated with the current contributory pension system managed by the National Pension Commission (PenCom).
