US Embassy Releases Report On How Nigeria’s Ruling Class Splash Billions On Government Houses

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has released a report alleging lack of fiscal responsibility among Nigeria governors, reports Business Today NG.

The report, released on Tuesday, 29 July, 2025 highlighted a growing concern over fiscal irresponsibility among Nigerian state governors, sharing a recent investigative report that details billions spent on building or renovating government houses despite widespread economic hardship.

The report, titled “Nigeria’s ruling class splashes billions on government houses” and published by The Africa Report, criticises the political elite for extravagant spending at a time when many Nigerians are struggling with the effects of economic reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu.

“While Nigerians are tightening their belts, the same cannot be said of the ruling class,” the report reads in part.

Citing specific examples, it noted that Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration approved ₦63.4 billion for the renovation of the Government House, calling the existing structure an “embarrassment” and “unbefitting.” In Gombe State—ranked among the poorest in the country—Governor Inuwa Yahaya is constructing a new ultra-modern residence for ₦14.9 billion, alongside another ₦14.23 billion project for a new House of Assembly complex.

Quoting voices from transparency and accountability organisations, the U.S. embassy shared the article on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, writing:

“Such alleged lack of fiscal responsibility fuels inequality and erodes public trust.”
