BY SUNDAY SAMUEL—Two nurses have been detained over their alleged involvement in the deaths of two young sisters at the General Hospital in Zuru, Kebbi State, following a suspected medication error.

The girls, aged six and three, reportedly died on March 18 under circumstances believed to be linked to negligence during their treatment. The suspects are currently being held by police in Birnin Kebbi while investigations continue to determine the exact cause of the incident.

In response, the Kebbi State Government has set up a nine-member investigative panel led by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed. The panel has already begun hearings in Zuru.

As part of its response, the state government also provided ₦10 million to the grieving family as a gesture of support. Speaking at the Emir’s Palace in Zuru during the presentation, Ahmed emphasized that the donation was intended to help the family cope with their loss.

“This donation is meant to support the family during this painful time. It cannot replace the lives lost,” he said, adding that no amount of money could make up for such a tragedy, but the gesture was to show the family they are not alone.

The Emir of Zuru, Alhaji Mohammed Sanusi Mikailu Sami, urged the family to remain steadfast in faith and accept the incident as the will of God. He also praised Governor Nasir Idris for his prompt intervention, describing it as a demonstration of compassion and commitment to justice.

The monarch further called on healthcare workers to maintain high professional standards, stressing that negligence in the health sector is unacceptable. He emphasized the importance of continuous training and retraining for medical personnel.

On behalf of the family, Barrister Garba Shehu expressed appreciation to the state government for its support and for initiating a thorough investigation to prevent a recurrence. While acknowledging their grief, he noted that the family finds some comfort in their faith.

During the panel’s ongoing sittings, several medical staff, including senior doctors and nurses who were on duty at the time, have testified and undergone cross-examination. The parents of the deceased, led by their father, Ibrahim Abdullahi Shuni, along with other relatives, also recounted the events surrounding the deaths.

The panel has additionally engaged hospital staff, where concerns about poor communication among personnel were highlighted as a key issue needing urgent attention.

Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has announced plans to arraign former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, before a Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna on Tuesday.

The commission disclosed that the charges, filed on March 18, include alleged conversion and possession of public property, as well as money laundering.

In a statement issued on Monday, ICPC spokesperson, John Okor Odey, said El-Rufai will be arraigned alongside Joel Uju.

He further revealed that a separate case has been instituted against the former governor at a Kaduna State High Court, involving allegations of abuse of office, fraud, and intent to commit fraud to confer undue advantage.

According to the commission, the date for the state high court arraignment will be communicated in due course.

“Similarly, another charge, number KDH/KAD/ICPC/01/26, against Malam Nasir El-Rufa’i and one Amadu Sule (LEDA), has also been filed before a Kaduna State High Court in the Kaduna Judicial Division,” the statement reads in part.

“The charges in the State High Court case range from abuse of office, fraud, and intent to commit fraud to conferring undue advantage, among others. Both charges were filed by the ICPC on the 18th of March, 2026.

“The date of arraignment in the State High Court will be communicated at the appropriate time as determined by the Court. My

“The ICPC wishes to inform the public that Mallam Nasir El-Rufa’i has been duly served. The ICPC restates its commitment to adhering fully to due process and the rule of law at all times.”

Following his release by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in February, the former Kaduna State governor has remained in the custody of the ICPC.

On March 5, a magistrate court approved a 14-day extension of his remand, prolonging his detention beyond the initial order.

The situation has sparked mounting pressure on the commission, with multiple calls especially from the opposition urging authorities to either formally charge him or grant his release.

In response, El-Rufai filed a fundamental rights enforcement suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja, challenging both the search carried out at his residence by the ICPC and the legality of the remand order issued on February 19.

The case names several respondents, including the ICPC, the magistrate who authorized the remand, the inspector-general of police, and the attorney-general of the federation

The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old male suspect, Ugwu Desmond, for the attempted murder and rape of a pregnant woman in Affa community, Udi Local Government Area.

The 30-year-old victim (names withheld) had on the night of March 14, 2026, set out on a short walk back home from a neighbour’s house — an ordinary, familiar path through a quiet track road in Amokwo-Affa in Udi Local Government Area. But what should have been a routine return turned into a terrifying ordeal.

Unaware she was being followed, she was suddenly attacked from behind by the suspect, who was armed with a cutlass.

He forced her to the ground, gripped her neck in a bid to strangle her, and covered her mouth to silence her cries. She was then dragged into an uncompleted building, where he threatened to kill her if she resisted, before forcefully raping her and inflicting injuries on her body

Her survival, and the strength to report the harrowing ordeal by about 6:15 a.m. on March 15, 2026, triggered swift police intervention, as operatives of the Affa Police Division promptly mobilized and arrested the suspect.

The victim was immediately taken to the hospital for medical examination and treatment, while the scene was processed, leading to the recovery of critical exhibits, including the cutlass used in the attack and clothing bearing suspected blood and seminal stains.
